Well.....it is a 2 hander musical with no applause breaks or interval so in those terms it is very different to most "normal" musical productions. It has just finished a Boston run and is set for a return season Off-Broadway in May this year. As it said in the original message it tries to explain thea reasoning behind why two of Bostons richest children would start off with larceny and end up murdering a 14 year old boy. while the subject matter is dark the musical itself is not overpowering. With songs like "Nothing Like a Warm Romantic Fire" sung as the two boys cuddle in front of a Warehouse fire they have just lit or my favourite "We Could Kill My Brother John" which Richard sings while weighing up all the good things that could be gained by killing his younger brother. Here are some websites that maybe of interest - www.stonehamtheatre.org/781-279-2200/emerging_stages/thrill_me.htmlwww.thrillmethemusical.com/ American Website www.leopoldandloeb.com/

Thanks for that! With songs like "Nothing Like a Warm Romantic Fire" sung as the two boys cuddle in front of a Warehouse fire they have just lit or my favourite "We Could Kill My Brother John" which Richard sings while weighing up all the good things that could be gained by killing his younger brother. If you weren't aware that those titles were actual songs from an actual show, you'd have a huge laugh ;D Buff

Shall I complicate things further by saying I know another Nathan Butler who's also an aspiring actor, yet who I'm fairly sure has been neither to WAAPA nor BAPA? Bring out the middle names, I say.

Hi all....! Long time, no post! (although I do float around silently..... ) I'm pretty sure it isn't Nathan Butler from WAAPA. He's a friend of mine and also in the same yaer at WAAPA as my boyfriend so I would definatly have heard about that if it was true, that would be huge news! Also, WAAPA never give time off. Especially as they will be rehearsing Crazy For You at that time (their midyear musical) which is being directed by Nancye Hayes.... soph xoxox

A Brutal Sell
How do you attract sponsors for a musical where the subject is the true story of the kidnap and murder of a young boy by gay lovers? That’s the challenge facing the stars and producers of Thrill Me – a musical scheduled to have its Australian Premier at Theatreworks in April. Thrill Me premiered in 2003 at the Midtown International Theatre Festival in New York. It is a musical that tells the chilling story of Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb and chronicles the infamous events that led two young wealthy Chicago lovers in 1924 to commit an unthinkable crime - the murder of a young boy. While the show has received critical acclaim in New York, it is proving difficult to find sponsors for the Melbourne Production. Adrian Corbett, one of the stars of Thrill Me, explains, “Gay themed musicals can often generate good publicity by using the maxim ‘sex sells’. A show like ‘Naked Boys Singing’ that has five buff, a naked guy on stage is much easier to market than a show about murder”.
However, having such a dark subject for a musical is not uncommon. Anthony Young and Simon Bowden, hosts of ‘Radio Free Broadway’ on Joy Melbourne explain; “When most people think of musicals, they think singing cats - light and frivolous - but musicals have traditionally explored a range of subjects, many unpalatable and confronting. Show Boat tackled racism head on in the 20's, for example,” said Anthony. “Murder has had many dramatic and popular musical treatments in shows like Chicago, Sweeney Todd and Kiss of the Spider Woman.” “Its very exciting that Thrill Me will be presented in Melbourne,” added co-host Simon.
While some difficulty in getting sponsors was expected, it has been harder than anticipated. Nathan Butler, who stars as Nathan Leopold, agrees it will be a tough sell; “In recent decades one of the great advances has been disproving the myth that all gay men are paedophiles who want to corrupt children. We are hoping that community attitudes have changed enough so that a show like Thrill Me can succeed without anyone thinking that it will support anti-gay sentiment. However, the fear of a negative reaction is exactly what makes this show so difficult to attract sponsors that want to target the gay community.”
Sponsorship is vital for new musical theatre in Australia. The size of New York, both in terms of population and number of visitors, means that it is possible for new shows to open and build a reputation over time. The producers of Thrill Me are hoping to hear from potential sponsors. A range of sponsorship packages have been developed, including many that include double passes for the sponsor’s employees or clients.
Thrill Me stars Adrian Corbett and Nathan Butler and opens at Theatreworks in St. Kilda on 13th April. Tickets are now on sale from Theatreworks by calling 9534 3388. Tickets booked before March 11th are eligible for an advance purchase price of $16. People interested in sponsoring the show can obtain a sponsorship information kit by e-mailing thrillmemusical@optusnet.com.au.

They’re just your average, young couple: one loves the other too much, and one uses the other without regard to their feelings. They bicker; they bargain. Oh yes: and they commit murder and get caught. Thrill Me is the musical about the real-life Leopold and Loeb 1924 murder case.
The count down to the opening night has begun.....
12th of April is a charity performance for the John Williams Foundation......$20 a ticket with $5 going to the foundation plus all program sales
Other nights $19 full price $16 Conc (MEAA members, unemployed etc) $12 ALL STUDENTS!!!
See you there....
