McCUNE, CAMPBELL, BURCHMORE, BUTEL, MANN and PALADINO headline VIRGINS UNPLUGGED. The cream of Australian musical theatre talent are banding together for an intimate one-off concert to raise money to send the cast of hit Australian musical VIRGINS to New York City.
Lisa McCune, David Campbell, Rhonda Burchmore, Mitchell Butel and Silvie Paladino are just some of the extraordinary talents lending their voices to VIRGINS UNPLUGGED. The evening, to be hosted by Colette Mann at inner-city jazz venue Manchester Lane, is an opportunity for music theatre fans to experience these talents performing up-close as well as being part of sending the cast of VIRGINS to the New York Music Theatre Festival (NYMF) in September.
NYMF is a three week event in NYC that has premiered over 70 musicals in its first two years, becoming the largest musical theatre event in American history. Hailed as "the Sundance of Musical Theatre", it is now widely regarded among the entertainment industry as the key source for new material and talent discovery.
VIRGINS will appear at the Festival as one of the prestigious Invited Shows, and will feature the original Melbourne cast.
Written by Dean Bryant and Mathew Frank, Green Room Award winning writers of the Australian and off-Broadway hit musical Prodigal, VIRGINS premiered at the CUB Malthouse in January this year, to sell-out houses and rave reviews. The Age said that "Virgins is an exhilarating experience. Funny, edgy and visually spectacular, it burst at the seams with talent at every level." The Herald-Sun called VIRGINS "a musical with legs...not to mention hips, thighs and buttocks… a pungent, pants-wettingly funny satire on politics and pop culture".
The VIRGINS UNPLUGGED concert is Monday August 21st at 8pm, and will also feature 2006 Green Room winners James Millar and Lisa Sontag, Helpmann nominee Bert LaBonte, cabaret vixen Meow Meow, dance sensation Natalie Marsland and the cast of VIRGINS; Esther Hannaford, Verity Hunt-Ballard, Amanda Levy and Kellie Rode.
