On second thoughts, this is likely to be a role they try to stunt cast, in which case I have new predictions. It has to be someone who'll draw a crowd - so Moonface is probably out - and who doesn't have much else to do these days. So my top bets are on Kevin Sheedy or Steve Bracks (after all, he had a hand in bringing it here!)

I would love to see Tony Sheldon as the Wizard. He is supposed to be 'showbizzy' (not 'old manish', as most of the predictions constantly suggest).
There is no way bert newton will play this role. Its meant to be a sleak, light on his feet, charismatic character. A satire of a world leader.
My feeling is we will probably not be very familiar with any of the actors who end up playing the lead roles in Wicked. Just as we are not familiar with many in the other overseas shows that have come here of late- Billy Elliot, Spamalot.
So I think 'star casting' is pretty redundant.
The wizard will be very likely played by some magnificent actor who has been doing his professional yards for years and has been concealing a singing voice (think Richard Piper in Billy Elliot)

I just read the poll...this is ridiculous. The role of the wizard in the wizard of Oz is a COMPLETELY different character description to that of the Wizard in WIcked. In Wicked, he is a character that satirises world leaders...and is super good on his feet.
I am going with Kevin Johnston or his ilk

Yes, Kevan Johnston would be good (not KevIn Johnston, the singer from the 70's), or how about Barry Otto?
