Sounds like a bit of sickness in the cast, and the crowd is not happy. Click here for the SMH's article. Buff

I don't remember that sort of fuss when most of the cast had laryngitis when the show opened. And in a show where the understudies are so strong, this sort of thing is frankly rude. And to publish it as a news article is even worse. Must have been a quiet news day.

Oh no, it's been a huge news story in Sydney. Basically because Phantom pulls non-theatre goers out of the woodwork to see the only name in Aussie theatre that they know. They don't understand how theatre works, so they complain. It's not an Anthony Warlow concert people!
People have been phoning in to ABC radio to have a big whinge. Some woman said yesterday "If Anthony Warlow can't cope with 8 shows a week, then he should get out of show business."
God, I'd like to see her try it for an extended season.

I don't remember that sort of fuss when most of the cast had laryngitis when the show opened. There wasn't. I'm honestly surprised at the adverse reaction. My second time in Melbourne seeing the show was with Roy as the Phantom - there was a pre-show announcement about it which was greeted by a ripple of disappointed 'aws' at the lack of Anthony, followed immediately by supportive applause all around the theatre for Roy (who was, for the record, very good. I remember writing an e-mail to you about it, Julia! Also, he broke the monkey ;D I told you about that too!). The audience gave him a very enthusiastic reception at curtain call. I understand that some people watch the show specifically for Anthony's Phantom and tickets aren't cheap. Perhaps any absence of the two leads at a performance should be made known earlier (as opposed to 5 minutes before curtain, as it was when I got the understudy) and the option for refunds or ticket exchange should be allowed. It'd be better for the performers too - they wouldn't have to put up with audience members determined to be unhappy regardless of how good the actual performance they're watching is.

I think that offering refunds or exchanges to people on the basis of performers changing is very dangerous ground to enter into... theatre doesn't do fantastically well in Australia, and I think that, to potentially lose a whole crowd every time the lead does not show is a bad move. Plus, what if there is an all-star cast? Then one might be off one night, another off another night... do you refund or exchange most of the run? And who defines which actors are important enough to provide refunds for if they're off? Do supporting roles count? What if I come to see Joe Bloggs in chorus role number 3 and he's sick... that's who *I* came to see - do I get a refund? Then come the troubles of trying to fit people in to other nights, where they may not get as good seats (and they may not get in at all due to full houses). From doing outdoor cinemas, I know how hard it is to fulfill everyone's desires if a show is cancelled. It's Phantom of the Opera starring Anthony Warlow, not an Anthony Warlow concert. These silly people should learn what theatre entails and "if they can't learn that, they should get out of the audiences of show business!"
