Mary Poppins the Musical is a musical based on the books by Australian author P.L. Travers. It is one of the world-famous musicals, that has already proved a Broadway show and West End hit. This amazing show has been played in front of 4.2 million people. Something distinctive in this performance is that in it there is a mix of new music and famous songs from the Walt Disney film made in 1964.
The London Production of Mary Poppins has received many prestigious awards, including: Olivier Award "Best Theatre Choreography" (Matthew Bourne & Stephen Mear) in 2005, Olivier Award "Leading Actress in a Musical" for Laura Michelle Kelly in 2005, Variety Club Award for Best Musical, Evening Standard Award for Best Design (Bob Crowley) in 2005, Whatsonstage.com Award for Best Set Design (Bob Crowley) in 2005, Lastminute.com"s Big Star Award presented to "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" as Favourite Theatre Moment.
Initially the Premier John Brumby said that the Musical Marry Poppins follows eight other musicals, Wicked, Jersey Boys, Billy Elliott, Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, Phantom of the Opera, Spamalot, and The Lion King, in marking Melbourne as Australia's theatre capital. A little later then he suggested that over time this musical may outdo all of them. Although Travers never admits that Marry Poppins is based on a real person there are theatre producers that maintain that idea. One of them is Cameron Mackintosh. He said that most of Travers’s characters are inspired by people she knew growing up in Sydney and Brisbane. He claims that despite the success of the film she always wanted it to be a musical. With the help of Thomas Schumacher from Disney Theatrical Productions he mixes the music from the movie into the musical. And so he help Travers to make her wish come true.
In Plymouth, Western Morning News said that this performance was the most perfect example of musical theatre they had ever seen. Herald Express announced that this new production of Marry Poppins is perfect in every way.
In Edinburgh, Scottish Daily Express wrote that the songs, the stunning sets are amazing and Magical Mary is a true supernanny.
In National reviews the comments of the musical are thousands and more, but their idea is identical. In different ways they say that Marry Poppins the Musical is magnificent, glorious, splendid, gorgeous, perfect etc.
