I gave myself a 15 minute break and put this together:
Peter Harvey (Julian Marsh) – Peter is a character in real life and it shows in his performances. He was very good as Julian. I particularly enjoyed his scenes with Dorothy Brock where he really portrayed his dislike that he had to cast the “once was” actress. He has a resonant, powerful voice, which worked well being the “director” of “Pretty Lady”
Kate Carswell (Peggy Sawyer) – Kate just keeps getting better and better every show I see her, and she was pretty darn good in the first place! I saw the closing night performance and if Kate was tired from doing the matinee in the afternoon, she didn’t show it. I’ve always been amazed at her dancing ability, but her singing was just as good. She was perfect for the role.
Jeffrey Clarke (Billy Lawler) – I better not say anything bad, since Jeffrey is my best friend…..as if I could. I’ve never heard Jeffrey sing badly, and this performance was no exception. In one song he hit a high note, which I thought might have been an F# or G. His wife sitting next to me whispered that it was an A. It was that effortless.
Kerri Gay (Dorothy Brock) – Kerri had her part down pat. In all the promotional material, she had been saying how she was looking forward to playing a prima donna/diva role and she lived up to it. She huffed and puffed and stomped around the stage brilliantly.
The other supporting leads were all very good too – it was great to see some new faces and they had great voices too. The ensemble had a great sound. In particular one song where the males had a section by themselves – some of the best, balanced male voice singing I’ve heard in a while.
I should also mention the dances and the orchestra. The dancers were breathtaking. People in the cast had been telling me how good they were, but they still blew me away.
The orchestra has played for the last 3 big shows the Society has done (as well as playing as a part of the local University Big Band) and the cohesion really showed. They were a extremely tight unit.
The production crew should also be congratulated. Di Summers as director put together a great show.
