It’s been a while coming, but I thought I might give a quick review of “The Producers”. I saw it on Friday 3 September and, too be honest, was not terribly impressed. It seemed all the right things were being done at the right time but it just didn’t grab me. I found the first half in particular very flat. I remember saying to my friends at interval “I hope this improves in the second half!” Thankfully it did, but not enough to stop me thinking I’d paid too much for the tickets. The show did have some good moments and some very funny lines, but not enough to really get me excited about the show as a whole. The funniest bit was when Max Bialystock is in jail and does a quick run down of what has happened in the show so far – singing excerpts of songs (as in a couple of bars each). He then yells out “Interval” and sits down and does nothing. Some people started laughing, so he says to the MD “There’s some laughter, but no applause!” so some people started clapping. He then says, “It sounds like an Olympic event in Athens!” which got a huge cheer. It’s sad that the biggest laugh in the show was an ad-lib! Buff
