Be warned, this is likely to be the shortest review you'll get from me in a very long time, because I simply don't have the time to do a proper write-up, but must write something. Also, I'll confess that I wasn't concentrating on the show quite as much as I should have. Opening nights are such fun.
So, here goes my lightning review.
Marina Prior and Scott Irwin were as good a match on stage as I'd expected when I'd first heard that particular bit of casting, and individually managed to exceed even my expectations (which were higher than many). Marina's accent was suitable appalling, and her character had everyone in stitches, proving once and for all that she can indeed do something other than the sweet ingenue, for those who had doubts. Scott was suitably charismatic, a perfect match character-wise and vocally for Marina, and acting the "big swollen-headed stiff" wonderfully.
Two other stand-outs in the cast were Renee Burleigh and Ranjeet Starr as Winnie Tate and Tommy Keeler, the young lovers. They were a beautiful pair, charming the audience with their innocence, and providing a lovely contrast to most of the others up on stage.
I was also incredibly surprised to see Adam Murphy in a role so completely different from the others in which I'd seen him. This was the first in which he'd been completely unrecogniseable. Well done, Adam! At the other end of the scale, Gary Down was absolutely the same as ever as Charlie Davenport, and I'm certain he was even wearing some of the same costume he had in High Society.
