I know it's hardly fair to compare two shows that are sharing a city, but I'll say right now that I enjoyed this far more than Saturday Night Fever. There, I've said it, and may I rot in hell.
Anyway, the show is of course pure parody, and as parody works very well. The direction and choreography are extremely effective, and the timing of songs is brilliant, especially in moments like 'Ten Dollars Closer,' even if the first few words of each part can't compete with the audience's laughter. The cast worked well together, and seemed to be having a ball on stage.
Lisa Adam was a convincing Debbie, getting the character across, and playing the humour effectively, especially in "Debbie Benton" and "Ten Dollars Closer". She also did well to play the brainlessness and parrotting of verbose thoughts that had been planted in her head, to the bewilderment of all.
Zoe Ventura played the 'mean girl', Lisa, perfectly, and sang very strongly, presenting a striking contrast to the other girls, and harmonising beautifully with Lisa (Adam, not her own character. I don't think anyone's that good) in the final number. A strong performance.
The malleable Roberta was played wonderfully by Beck Corley, a fantastic premiere performance, and Georgina Hart was right on the mark as Donna. And finally for the girls, Emma Hawthorne was a gorgeous Tammy, and again a striking contrast to the rest of the girls, in her strong ideals and innocence.
And of course the men did just as well, with Richard O'Brien giving a fun performance and sending the audience rolling in "The Dildo Rag", David Keene fitting all his characters so well it was hard to tell it was the same actor, and David Harris never failing to meet my expectations, always performing strongly.
Overall it was an exremely enjoyable night, with lots of laughs and a simple, yet coherent, plot, not aiming too high, and thus leaping easily. I'll warn you that there was the occasional sexual reference (It's a parody of a porn flick, for goodness' sake! What did you expect?)... okay, so quite a few, but it was all in fun. So go see it. A one week run is bloomin' ridiculous!
Ok bye!
