I’ve been told (several times) that I should do a review for this show. So for peace of mind (mine, that is ) here it is.
Overall, I really enjoyed this production. The show itself is not one of my favourites, put this group did an excellent job of it. The costumes and sets were specifically designed to be “cartoon-ish” and it worked really well. If they had just been stock standard costumes and sets, it would have been quite bland.
The four leads were excellent. Carol Deveraux as Miss Adelaide in particular was the highlight of the show. Her character was so believable and likeable, and she worked very well with Cliff Anderson (Nathan Detroit). Cliff was asked to take the role when the original person cast had to pull out due to work commitments and it would have been hard to imagine anyone doing it better.
Heidi Cooper was a convincing Sarah Brown. The differences from when she was “Mission” leader, and starting to fall in love with Sky were well done. In sone circumstances, these “gaps in character” (can’t think of a better way to put it) are overdone, but Heidi kept it well under control. Sky Masterson (Jeffrey Clarke) impressed me most in this production because this character is the furthest away from his actual personality. In previous shows, I could say “That is so like Jeffrey” to some part of his character, but not this one.
I also have to mention John de Jong as Nicely-Nicely Johnston and Richard Clarke as Benny Southstreet. These guys worked really well together, and John’ version of “Sit down you’re rocking the boat” was a real highlight.
The choreography of Di Summers was it’s usual high standard, with the Crap Game being a highlight. Danny Gibson as director is to be congratulated not just for an excellent show, but taking over the role of Big Jules when the person cast injured themselves 2 weeks before opening night.
