A week ago today I travelled the 2 hours to Hobart with Mrs Buff & Buff Jnr to hear Anthony Warlow in concert with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. I thought I should do a review, even though you can pretty much guess what I’ll say ;-)
The concert started with just Tommy Tycho walking onto the stage and playing a riff on the piano, while looking at his watch. Gradually sections of the orchestra would run onto the stage and join in, the last being the triangle player who ran to the middle and finished the piece. The orchestra then started again and Anthony ran out and started singing “Just in Time”.
The first part of the concert was songs from his “Face the Music” & “Back in The Swing” CDs. A saxophone section had been imported into the orchestra to complete the big band sound.
He then branched into his musical theatre repertoire, the highlights of which were “Soliloquy” from Carousel and “This is the Moment” from Jekyll & Hyde
After interval, he did a medley of songs from the shows he has performed in over the years – “Guys & Dolls”, “Les Miserables”, “Annie”, “My Fair Lady”, “Phantom of the Opera”, “Man of La Mancha” as well as some opera song (from the Marriage of Figaro among others). He also did a medley of imitations – Michael Crawford, “Frank Spencer”, Dr. John Wright, Dean Martin (including where he sang into a glass of water and drank from the mike) & Jerry Lewis.
Anthony’s singing was top notch as you would expect, and it was amazing hearing him sing with a full orchestra. The most impressive thing for me was how for each song he would change his character. It was particularly noticeable in the musicals medley. He would sing the song as each character would sing the song, but he would also have small had gestures and body movements which you could tell were “in character”. It was breathtaking to see it in action.
He received 2 standing ovations for his performance and encores. A great night.
