First, loved it. A wonderful night despite my being sick with a fever.
I'll go through each song.
I Hope I get it: Ensemble were vibrant and fresh - nice choreography. Worked well as the show opener.
Roses Turn: Toni Lamond: Great performance - fun with good acting. I'm not such a Gypsy fan though, so this didn't have the wow factor for me.
The Flesh Failures/Let the Sunshine In: John Waters/Paula Arundell/Ensemble: I love Hair, and this song really gets to me every time I hear it. Waters performed it brilliantly - a very strong acting performance, as well as a solid voice. Arundell's performance however confused me - she was dancing around all happily while he was being all serious... it didn't seem to mesh, and made her look like a bit of an ditz really... still, she has a beautiful voice, and it was nice when she started singing. The chorus looked wonderful in this, and sounded great too - that was up until they started doing the "let's clap along to the music" thing I hate.
Jindyworoback: Drew Forsythe: Ugh... I hate Nick Enright's stuff.... Venetian Twins was all together too long and boring a musical... Forsythe was cute in this - did it all in a cute character voice - but I got bored. Probably remembering the full length version!
Tonight: Marina Prior/Peter Cousins: Just beautiful. These two have so much stage presence and class. Others have to work for the audience, but they just stepped out and were loved. Awe-inspiring performance.
All I Ask of You: Marina Prior/Peter Cousins: Again, simply beautiful. Although, Prior seemed to be having issues with her very top notes - whether it was a sound problem or not, I don't know, but she started slipping off pitch at times.
Afterglow/Bran Nue Dae: Ursula Yorvich: The first performer not to get applause before they started singing (poor thing!). But she's gorgeous - a beautiful voice, and she's just so cute, you want to pick her up and put her in your pocket! The audience definately warmed to her. The token 'reconciliation' hugs and touches between her and the white chorus were a bit too token for me though... very put on and fake.
A Little Priest: Peter Carroll/Judi Connelli: These two were simply fantastic - such wonderful actors, and you could tell they were having so much fun onstage working together. Great song!
Mein Herr: Rachel Beck/Ensemble: Can anyone say hot? Phwoar. These girls had everyone's jaws hitting the floor. Such a sexy performance with great choreography. Beck has a beautiful strong voice, and she really suited the role.
All I Care About is Love: Simon Burke/Ensemble: Meh... such a bleh song. Boring and nothing great happens. Boring show tune after Mein Herr. Burke was cute though.
The Sound of Music: Julie Anthony: Good performance - she does this role well. But we've seen it a million times. Very much a nostalgia song.
America: Caroline O'Connor/Ensemble: She is just such a wonderful performer: strong, beautiful voice, wonderful dance skills, and just such a versatile actor - she went from sexy to humorous in a heartbeat. Wonderful. The Ensemble were obviously having fun too.
Beneath the Southern Cross: Ian Stenlake/Ensemble: Token Australiana patriotic song. Alright, but nothing awe-inspiring.
Don't Rain on my Parade/People/Be Happy: Jill Perryman: She's gorgeous. Great actor, great singer. Very cute with the male dancers at the start.
Some Enchanted Evening: John Diedrich: Honestly don't remember this too well... I know it wasn't awful.
Class: Judi Connelli/Caroline O'Connor: Brought the house down. These two ladies were having a ball up there, and hamming it up for us - and it worked. So much fun!
Make Em Laugh: Wayne Scott Kermond: He's great in this role - simply a genius of comedy. Should have lived in the first half of last century really. Great performance.
Once in a Blue Moon: Peter Carroll: Another boring Enright musical (Summer Rain) and another boring song. Pity, because Carroll is great.
I'd Give my Life for You: Christina Tan: She's got such a musical theatre voice - she'd do well in America I reckon. Beautiful, strong and clear, and just a touch Disney. She performed this Miss Saigon song beautifully though.
Adelaide's Lament: Nancye Hayes: Such a fun performance - the audience lapped her up.
Memory: Debra Byrne: She had the audience frozen... so beautiful and magic!
Bring Him Home: Normie Rowe: Not a Normie Rowe fan. And there are better Les Mis songs to choose. That said, he did it justice.
Sunset Boulevard: Michael Cormick: Simply stunning - such a strong voice, and a powerful performance.
With One Look: Judi Connelli: Gorgeous diva song - she performed it beautifully and with strength.
Heart and Music: Ensemble: I'm a new fan of A New Brain, so I liked this performance. It was fun. There were a few choreographical errors by the chorus (spacing etc) which can be forgiven due to the short rehearsal period.
Company: Peter Cousins/Company: Fun as the last song. Not awe-inspiring, but great to see everyone come together to sing.
Overall a fantastic performance. The second half was a bit slower than the first, and there were quite a few technical hiccups (and chorus needed more rehearsals...) but great fun and a wonderful night!
