This is the second production of The Last Five Years I've seen, and such a contrast. The previous one was very minimalistic, but still well done, where this had been scaled up, and carried it well. Although I did feel for Matt and Laura in some of those costume changes.
Matt Hetherington and Laura Fitzpatrick both did excellently as Jamie and Cathy. While neither role makes you love the character, Jamie is the more engaging because of the music he's given, so it's easier for a good Jamie to stand out than a good Cathy, and Matt did stand out. Of course, Laura also did a wonderful job in a more thankless role. And hardest of all, both actors did a fabulous job at acting opposite a partner who was up to five years away.
The direction was excellently handled, with lovely use of the actor not currently in the spotlight elsewhere on stage when appropriate. A lovely touch, too, was the switching of sides on either side of The Next Ten Minutes, as an extra reminder of where they stood at that moment.
Overall a wonderful production of a lovely show, even if my review's somewhat scattered (That's what you get trying to throw together a review in the middle of a hundred other things), and one which everyone should definitely try to get to. I think there's another week to go, so get to Chapel Off Chapel!
