Well, I went last night expecting a fun, sing-along show that would be pretty nuts on the whole.
It really pleasantly surprised me! I thought it was just brilliant!! SO much fun to sing along to everything, but the performers were truly gifted - such beautiful singers. Especially the divas... oh god, what beautiful voices!! Especially Sophie and the girl who sang "I've never been to me". Just gorgeous strong voices. Especially considering they were flying for most of the show! Those harnesses must look like death to the girls now.
The drag/diva combination worked so well. I won't spoil it by saying how.
The boys were great, and I saw Nick (the Felicia understudy) who was also phenomenal in the role.
Holes in the show purely came out of the script. Some songs were shoved into it and it looked like they were shoving it and squishing it and trying to make it fit, but it just didn't. I would usually suppose that that happens with jukebox musicals, except that the rest of the show worked so well that I knew it could be done better. With a bit of good editing, that show could be truly great. It would work overseas I think. The drag stuff would definitely transfer. As would the (oh-too-american) hoe-down scenes. A little bit of the aussie humour would have to change, but I think it could be done.
Costumes were (obviously) phenomenal, and the bus.... THE BUS! Awesome. I can see how if the bus screwed up the show would be terrible, but that's not through a fault of the actors - it's just because so many scene changes/preps happened behind the bus which obviously couldn't be done if the bus wasn't there.
Kudos to a brilliant cast and a great show.
