It's not often a show leaves me lost for words, but Miss Saigon has managed. It is something everyone should try to see, because the tragic beauty of it and great wave of emotions that make up the show is something that I think is absolutely unique to this show. Nothing I've experienced has been quite like it, and I'm so glad I've seen it.
Being first preview, there were sound problems, and I felt some of the numbers were untidy vocally, but they didn't detract from the momentum of the piece.
Normally I'd have my reservations about imported stars, but Laurie Cadevida and Leo Tavarro Valdez well and truly earn their places in this production, Laurie a youthful but spirited Kim with a sweetness and strength in her voice reminiscent of Lea Salonga, and Leo's got as much flair as you could ever want in the Engineer.
David Harris' acting as Chris was everything we've come to expect from him, with a performance that seems well designed to play to his strengths. Sophie Katinis wasn't a sympathetic Ellen, but she had a strength that kept the character from slipping into the background.
Although the video footage ended up being the star of Bui Doi, Juan Jackson was strong as John (and I think all the ladies in the audience were watching his abs in the opening scene), and Christina Tan played Gigi with almost dark overtones.
Okay, so not quite lost for words, but nowhere near everything that's milling through my head. All I'll say is a gorgeous show, but take tissues. Do they have Kleenex as sponsors?
