Who do you think would be cast in it? I'd say Anthony Warlow would definitely be in it. Percy's songs match some of his finest moments, and the range of emotions seems to have been made for him. I know a few people who'd like to hear him sing "Where's the Girl?" but it's a small price to pay. It'd be nice to see Philip Quast as Chauvelin. I know it's stereotyping him a bit in the French police-hound roles, but I think it'd give him quite a good chance to show off his talent. I've been tossing up a couple of names for Marguerite, but I haven't decided on anyone yet. This is one time when I wouldn't choose Marina Prior. I considered Caroline O'Connor, but again decided against her....Any ideas? ~Julia

Yeah, I wouldn't say Marina either. After having listened to Linda Eder in a couple of the songs from the show, I don't think her voice would entirely suit. I wouldn't have a clue for Margurite, but mainly a new face? Sad as it is, one day Marina and Anthony will be too old so they had better start revealing new talents. Not that they are at that stage yet!!!

I was actually thinking about it again the other night, and I thought that Anthony may already be a bit old for Percy. So perhaps he could be Chauvelin after all. And I think (though any Mann fans out there are likely to kill me for this) he'd be able to pull of the role really well. When I was listening to my CD last night, I was listening carefully, and once you go past the beautiful voice, he puts very little emotion into the songs.
The interesting thing about Marguerite is that the two people I've heard sing her, Christine Andreas and Linda Eder, portray her very differently. And I'm singing "When I Look At You" in my lessons at the moment, and I've decided to take yet another interpretation. I must say I prefer Christine's portrayal of the role, but her accent's a little too thick for me, especially since none of the other French characters show an accent.
I need to pay more attention to the younger faces in Australian musical theatre. Perhaps after seeing The Last Five Years on Saturnight I'll be a little more enlightened.

Yeah, some roles allow for a different interpretation, (I guess like Eponine in Les Mis for example, who usually belts but can be sung without belting) but some, like Christine from POTO and Cosette from Les Mis have been played in the same way pretty much forever. (I.e. Sop, no belting and the whole 'innocent' thing)
I've never heard of Christine, (oooh, cool name) what recording is she on? I think I'm going to have to investigate this one. I think one of my fave broadway songs, (although the list is huge) is "I'll forget you" from SP. I think Linda's jazzy voice suits that song to a T, but I'm looking out for Christine's version, I love hearing different singers takes on songs.
Tell us how the Last Five years is...and I definitely need to brush up on my Aussie musical stars knowledge!!!

I just downloaded "When I look at you" by Christine...and I must say I'm torn. The first few seconds I thought, "Nah, Linda's better by a mile..." but then of course I listened to the whole thing and I'm not so sure. I think if I could get past her accent I'd like her version equal to Linda's, cause it's quite beautiful, if different. It's much more classical, and it really suits the song, so I really don't know now, you've confused me. Although this is kind of off topic, as we were discussing Aussie possibilities. Sorry!

some, like Christine from POTO and Cosette from Les Mis have been played in the same way pretty much forever. (I.e. Sop, no belting and the whole 'innocent' thing) That's mostly because for roles like that, vocal ability is taken as more important than acting ability (rightly), so a lot of the actresses playing those roles don't do all that is possible with the character. There have been some rather unique and applauded performances of the roles, though. Christine's on the original broadway cast recording, with Douglas Sills and Terrence Mann. It's a fantastic recording. However, the structure of the show has changed since then, so it doesn't have all the songs that the new recording has, so I'm afraid you won't be able to hear Christine sing "I'll forget you" Linda and Christine are really quite incomparable because they're so different. I suppose the deciding factor in which I liked more would be who was the better actor, but I'm not likely to see either on stage any time soon, so I'll just have to listen to the two very different interpretations, and keep my own in mind. No, that's fine! It's a really good discussion! This is what I was hoping would come to the board eventually, but thought it wouldn't be until we had more people ~Julia
