I heard Colm singing Music of the Night this morning. Has anyone else heard him? I'm not sure whether it's just me, but listening to him felt like hearing an elephant stomp past. He hit each note so heavily. It seemed a bit odd.

100% agreement. I actually have the Canadian Cast Recording, and I must admit, I hate it...except for occasionally when the Christine doesn't sound too operatic, but that isn't often.
His voice is very rough, I don't think that's anything to do with his accent either. And that scratchy sort of sound really suits Jean Valjean because of his convict background, and he is just so much more a 'rough' character than Erik. Or maybe I've listen to the OCR of Les Miserables too much that I'm too used to Colm Wilkinson in it to then make the adjustment to his being in Phantom.
I can understand when people are rabid Colm fans in general, but if the Cast Recording is to go by then I prefer Crawford all the way!

Actually, mentioning Christines (and Eriks too, really), there's a really good Japanese recording which my host sister copied for me when I was over in Japan. The Christine has a beautiful voice, and even though she occasionally sounds really cutesy, that can't really be helped since she is Japanese And in general, the cast is wonderful. The Erik's got a very rich voice, the balance in the "notes" section is wonderful (I can't stand it when one person in the section is absolutely drowned by the others. Now, what was I saying? Oh yes, Japanese PotO rocs ~Julia

Actually, I think I might know the one you are talking about! Yes, I haven't actually heard the whole thing, but I have heard Think of me and MOTN. Compared to some of the other Phantom's, I think the Japanese guy's voice suits the part as well. I had my doubts in the beginning because I've heard some Japanese opera, well, at least I think it was opera and they had the sterotypically nasal voices, it was crazy. But no, he was quite good, although I can't remember Christine's voice. I also like the German Christine's voice, grr, I have to find out her name. Oh yeah, I changed my name too. Tinechorwen is basically Shieldmaiden in elvish, but Eowyn is cooler I think.

I have no idea who this guy is, but then I haven't seen Phantom Of the Opera. Any good? If it is, I might ask my folks to take me next time its down under...

My suggestion would be to buy the Original Cast Recording starring Michael Crawford, Sarah Brightman and Steve Barton. Phantom hasn't been in Australia for awhile, and it isn't going to return for a while either.
