I've seen a professional production (in New Zealand) and the movie version. I know which one I prefer, but am interested in what you guys think. Is the movie the be all and end all, or is the "live" show still "it"? Buff

I thought the movie was great, fantastic and amazing, but I'd say I prefer the live performance better. Watching the movie version was fine, but a friend bought the recording, and hearing their voices without the visual stimulant was a bit of a shock. There voices weren't as powerful as the people I'd seen on stage when it came to Perth or on other CD's. So I would say the stage version, but considering that criticism I thought the movie was quite good, their dancing was amazing, probably considering I could NEVER do that!

That's interesting. I actually prefer the movie. The show I saw in NZ seemed very "seedy" for want of a better word. But having said that, NZ guy who did "Mr Cellophane" was fantastic. And the way they staged that song was so clever. It had much more of an effect on me than the movie version. Buff

I haven't seen the stage version yet, but I really enjoyed the movie. I know that there would have been quite a bit of music cut out, but it compensates with excellent cinematics. I think that, even if I had seen the stage version, I would have been torn between the two. I suppose it depends on what aspect of the show you appreciate the most.
And I think studying Cabaret in English last year helped me appreciate movie musicals more.

But having said that, NZ guy who did "Mr Cellophane" was fantastic. The guy I saw perform that role, not sure if it was the same one, was so skinny and funny looking, mean as this sounds, but he wsa just so funny singing that song that I never felt sorry for him at all, and it is meant to be kind of funny so it definitely worked. But in the movie, I really pitied him. I loved the feature film aspect of it though, they had SO much more freedom than the stage version. Just having all the setting, and I bawled in the hanging scene, that was so sad, while the stage version had me wondering for a few seconds what was happening. You did Cabaret in English? Lucky!

The hanging scene was so moving. And when I saw Chicago the second time, I watched Hunyak carefully every time she came on stage...erm, on screen, and always got goosebumps. Cabaret's a great film to study because it's fun, and there's so much you can write about! It's full of implications and references to society, and all that stuff that English teachers love. ~Julia

Dam those english teachers. I enjoy musicals that make you think (Les Mis), I don't know alot about Cabaret, I must admit I never imagined it being very deep when it came to issues on society because it seemed like such a 'showy' show, you know, the whole glizty lights, costumes etc. That's interesting, I might have to go find a sumary of it now.

It's interesting how differently you look at something once you've really thought about all the hidden messages in it. I can't even think about Tomorrow Belongs To Me without shivering any more.

Talissa, Is it just me or is the poll just showing one person has voted (ie me )? Have I set things up right? Or did I do something wrong which doesn't allow anyone else to vote? Or has no-one else voted? Just wondering... Buff

Well, I haven't voted since I've only seen the movie version, so I can't really say which one I prefer. If someone else has voted and it hasn't shown up, I'll have a look at it to see what I can do.

Well I just voted for the stage version, although I needed an inbetween vote, and it came up, so I think no one else must have voted.

Well, I have seen both versions, and they were both spectacular, so I can't decide! the stage version I saw was on Broadway, so, you know!

Tough choice - in this case I'd have to go stage - only because I was spoiled when I saw it we had Caroline O'Connor and Chelsea Gibb in the leads <g> Nice to see though the whole rivalry thing between co-stars not only applied to film
