Yes, it's yet another 'favourite' post, but until we flesh out a bit more in the members department, it's hard to discuss more substantial things.
So, what's your favourite G&S operetta?
Mine's Princess Ida, although Utopia Ltd and The Gondoliers are close behind

I don't really know much about them, but I have heard about them a few times. What would songs would you recommend of theirs I could listen to?

The light ones are usually good to start off with. The Mikado's a fun one, and I think you'd like the remake (The Hot Mikado). There's also Pirates of Penzance. It might be a bit tricky to get hold of it over there, but the Simon Gallaher version of Pirates is fantastic. I went to see it when they did their return tour at the start of the year.

Well I'm not really fully knowledgeable when it comes to G&S either, but I do know Pirates...and I do love it. Maybe it's the whole Marina Prior thing...I'm sure everyone knows the story of how Marina auditioned for the chorus and got the lead role of Mabel...well, if you didn't you do now. Seriously though, even without Marina, Pirates is fantastic...I didn't get to see the other version though, my friend raved about it as well which makes it worse.

I went to see Pirates this summer. It was so much fun! And we went to the stage door and met Simon and John and Mabel (I forget her real name), and the MD.... Okay, I'll stop raving ~Julia

That's such a hard question - I can't choose one favorite! I can probably do a top 6 (it should be a top 5, for the sake of convention, but I can't decide). In no particular order: Iolanthe, Pirates, The Gondoliers, The Mikado, Ruddigore and Patience. I like them all, though!
I've played Iolanthe in Iolanthe, Tessa in The Gondoliers and chorus in Pirates. My theatre group (the Queanbeyan Players) is doing The Mikado in October/November - I hope I'll get the part of Pitti-Sing. Next year we're doing Ruddigore (I'd love to play Mad Margaret). The year after that it'll probably be The Yeoman of the Guard (I'd like to play Phoebe) or Patience (I'd like to be Lady Angela).

Wow, your a full theatre star!! I've just been looking at theatre australia and one of the theatre companies in Perth is doing a production of The Mikado, I hope you get the part you are going for...is it a good production? Hell, I might audition for it, although by then I'll be busy, but still.

I'll hopefully be doing a production of The Mikado as my second musical for the year too *g* Imagine how funny it would be if we were both Pitti-Sing at the same time

Okay, change of plan...the Gilbert and Sullivan Society here isn't doing the Milkado, their doing the Gondoliers. Don't know how I mixed those ones up! You were in the Gondoliers weren't you Iolanna? Was it worth it, and there any parts for people our age or are they mainly chorus roles?

Maybe it's the whole Marina Prior thing... I was talking to a lady on the weekend who actually said she didn't like Marina's voice Can you believe that! Oh well. I've always loved Pirates and had the joy of finally singing "I am a Pirate King" in a concert on the weekend, which went really well. Someone told me they could see the twinkle in my eye as I sang Buff

Yeah, my old singing teacher didn't like her voice either. Except my old singing teacher was a twisted, old, jealous lady because she wanted to be an opera singer and ended up teaching high school students. She made us listen to Marina sing in the Secret Garden and critique it, which is kind of nasty as it wasn't her best performance. Nasty old lady! Sorry, I got off topic again didn't I! Lol, I just typed I as eye...I am such a looser.

If I remember correctly, there are a few named conatadine (the girls) in Gondoliers, as well as Casilda and the Duchess. Some of the roles are bigger than others, but there are plenty of them. It's great to hear your concert went well, Buff. Sounds like you had plenty of fun ~Julia

She thinks she is God's gift to singing. She has a great voice, huge range but has no power or real expression. She sings notes and that's about it. Last audition she did for a show, the director asked why they should cast her. Her reply was "Because I'm the best soprano you'll hear all day". She didn't get cast Buff

Is this Marina Prior?!!? Gawd, she always seemed so incredibley at all her interviews and concerts. Wow...I'm shocked, not speechless obviously but definitely shocked, I can't imagine her saying something like that at all...but if she did I'm glad they didn't cast her. Maybe she has got too big for her boots, it's not like she has alot of competition or anything...
