I seem to have confused you - sorry The person I was referring to was a lady I know who doesn't rate Marina. She made the comment "I'm the best soprano..." NOT Marina. Although I've never met Marina, she seems such a nice person. I can't imagine her saying anything like that. Buff

Lol, thank god! I thought I might have been confused, I usually am and this time I'm glad of it! I can see a pattern here, apparently unless you are actually talented when it comes to singing you shouldn't try and make it to the top...cause you won't and you'll end up angry and twisted and be teaching 7 year olds how to sing songs from Annie. Woohoo, Marina's name is cleared! For a whole 30 seconds I didn't like her much at all, it was dreadful!

Okay, change of plan...the Gilbert and Sullivan Society here isn't doing the Milkado, their doing the Gondoliers. Don't know how I mixed those ones up! You were in the Gondoliers weren't you Iolanna? Was it worth it, and there any parts for people our age or are they mainly chorus roles? The Gondoliers is fantastic - it might have the most female roles out of any of the operettas. There are THREE (count 'em, THREE) young female leads - Gianetta (soprano), Tessa (mezzo) (the role I played), and Casilda (soprano). Gianetta and Tessa are bigger parts, but Casilda is still a leading role. Gianetta and Tessa both have a solo, duets, quartets, a quintet - AND they sing in many of the chorus numbers. Casilda has two duets and various ensembles - quartets, quintets and so on. In addition, there are three smaller parts for young women - Fiametta (soprano), Vittoria (mezzo) and Giulia (mezzo I think). Fiametta is the largest of these roles, with more solo lines in songs (none of these three have dialogue), followed by Vittoria and then Giulia. As for the chorus - there is a large chorus of young women (technically there should be a total of 24 contadine, but most productions probably won't be quite this large!). They have a lot of stage time (as do most choruses in G&S) and sing some wonderful songs, including the wonderful Dance a Cachuca and many others. I would definitely recommend doing this show. Actually, I'd recommend doing any G&S, but, as you can see from my top six, this is up there among my favorites. I had a fantastic time doing it - admittedly in a lead role, but the people with smaller roles and in the chorus were having a great time too.

Iolanna, shame on you! You forgot the Duchess! *g* You did better at me at naming all the girls with solo lines, though. ~Julia

I was just mentioning the YOUNG women - I didn't mention Inez either! How could anyone forget the Duchess?

Thanks HEAPS for the info...so much detail!
This production sounds really great, I haven't been involved in a production in awhile and I'd really like to get back into it. Depends how busy I am when auditions time comes I guess.
