Hi everyone!!
I am just writing to let you know about a new Australian musical being workshopped that you are able to come to if you have some free time. Its on a first-reply-gets-in basis, as seats are LIMITED. Its called THE HATPIN with book and lyrics by James Millar and music by Peter Rutherford. It is being shown at Downstairs of the Seymour Centre, Sydney on Monday 28 November 2005 at about 2pm. Most people will know James from Eureka, Boyband, Oklahoma with the Production Company and corporate events. As well as being an entertainer and composer, Peter is an upcoming musical director. James and Peter have received fantastic feedback with regards to the show already.
A workshop has been arranged to showcase the piece thus far. This first Workshop will be in "concert format" meaning no sets or technical requirements, simplistic/stylised blocking, but largely, the cast will be seated and read/act from script and score. Please keep this in mind.
The story of the show:"The Hatpin" is based on the true case of Amber Murray, an 18 year old single-mother who lived in Redfern in 1892. In an era when birth control was not available, abortion violent and illegal, employment scarce, and financial support for single mothers non-existant, Murray, like many young mothers in the same position, was urged to advertise her baby, Horace, to more privileged carers in a trading column of the Herald. Charles and Agatha Makin answered the advertisement and would accept a small payment each week from the desperate mothers of these children in return for their service of care. "The Hatpin" follows Amber's tireless efforts to reform her life for her son and be in a position to mother him once more...in the face of terrifying and wicked adversity. The case of Amber Murray and her son Horace, lead to great reforms for the plight of the single mother and was largely responsible for the establishment of the 1902 Child Protection Act.
There is a great cast of actors/music theatre graduates involved (including Amanda Muggleton, Stephen Collins, Mel Stewart, Amelia Cormack, Sophie Carter, Luke Barron, Alexander Lewis, Matthew Leonard, Chris Tomkinson, Andrea Getley, Nathan Carter, Beck Corley, Jennifer Peers and Callie Grey) so if you would like the opportunity to see this musical in its first EVER showing, please rsvp me at lukebarron@aapt.net.au and you’ll be placed onto a waiting list. Once we have gathered numbers and details (regarding number of seats and invited guests etc who need to attend) we will go through the list to let you know if there is still availability.
If you need further details, please email me as we are in early stages of organisation.
Regards,
Luke Barron
