Encore Theatre Company is please to announce their confirmed productions for 2010.
Les Misérables. It’s bigger, its better and its back.
Based on the Victor Hugo classic of the same name, Les Misérables has become one of the world’s most popular musicals. This theatrical masterpiece has been translated into 21 languages and professional productions have been seen by over 50 million people in 38 countries. It has won numerous awards throughout the world, including 8 Tony Awards.
For close to 2 decades audiences have been thrilled and inspired by this wonderful version of Les Miserables, which is set to one of the most memorable and dramatic scores ever written. ‘I Dreamed a Dream’, ‘On my Own’, ‘Do you Hear the People Sing?’, ‘Stars’ and ‘Bring Him Home’ are among its many highlights which have moved audiences to standing ovations performance after performance. Here is your chance to be a part of the Les Misérables phenomenon at the Princess Theatre in March 2010.
"Willkommen, bienvenue, welcome, in cabaret, au cabaret, to cabaret!"
Kander and Ebb's landmark musical turns Weimar Berlin of 1931 into a dark and sexually charged haven of decadence, its extraordinary and morally ambiguous inhabitants determined to keep up appearances as the real world - outside the comfortable sanctuary of the cabaret - prepares for the nightmarish chaos of war.
With it’s haunting, unforgettable music, Cabaret is divinely decadent entertainment at its best! Keep a space free in your diary to pay a visit to the Earl Arts Centre July 2010.
“A tale as old as time….”
From the magic and wonder of Disney comes an event that brings a tale as old as time to life on stage in Launceston.
The Tony Award-winning smash hit musical is based on the Disney animated film version of the much loved fairytale. Featuring the stunning Academy-Award winning musical score that made the animated film such a hit, plus another 7 songs created for the Broadway show by master-composer Alan Menken and lyricist Tim Rice, it is a classic tale of love, sacrifice, jealousy, revenge and redemption exploring an age-old theme: the true meaning of beauty.
Disney's Beauty and the Beast opened on Broadway in 1994 and has since become an international sensation that has played to over 17 million people worldwide and finally arrives at the Princess Theatre in October 2010.

Encore Theatre Company was officially launched by the Mayor of Launceston Albert van Zetten on Tuesday August 26 to a packed house at the Launceston Workers Club. Deputy Mayor Rosemary Armitage, Sue Napier MHA and Robyn Lohrey General Manager Theatre North were in attendance. Apologies were received from the Premier of Tasmania David Bartlett MHA, Michael Polley MHA, Don Wing MLC, Kerry Finch MLC, Ivan Dean MLC and Jana Harper, Northern Officer Arts Tasmania and ABaF. MC'd by Rick Marton, the formalities were kept to a minimum, with brief addresses from Jamie Hillard and BJ King (Encore Theatre Company), Martin O'Toole (ResCom), Sean Colson (Greg Crick Honda) and Diane Summers (Director, The Sound of Music). Five weeks out from opening night, the enthusiastic audience were given a sneak peek of what to expect from the cast: Do Re Mi was performed by Melissa de Jong as Maria, and Zoe Jensen, James Briffa, Ella Booth, John Morgan, Bree Stepehens, Nikia Breen and Lauren Colson as the Family von Trapp No Way to Stop It was performed by John de Jong as Max Detweiler, Sarah Haberle as the Baroness and Daniel Priest as Captain von Trapp. The Morning Hymn and Alleluia was performed by the Nuns Chorus And finally, The Sound of Music provided theatre audiences with one of the most thrilling and inspiring musical finales, based on the true story of the Family Von Trapps flight from Nazi-invaded Austria on the eve of World War II. Translating the courage of the family into a musical score, Rodgers and Hammerstein wrote one of the most celebrated songs of 20th century musical theatre. To close the musical presentation of the Company and Production Launch, Di Briffa who plays Mother Abbess sang Climb Ev’ry Mountain. Encore Theatre Company will present The Sound of Music at the Princess Theatre for 5 performances only, October 1-4 2008. Bookings 6323 3666 or online at www.theatrenorth.com.au

I was reading in the Sound of Music programme that John de Jong has been precast as Jean Valjean for this show. Do other people think that there might be other people around by then who would like to audition for that role and are just as capable? Don't get me wrong - John de Jong is great. I saw him in the Players' production (parents wouldn't let me audition ) and he would be grgeat again no doubt. I'm just not a fan of precasting.

Encore Theatre reserve the right to precast any role, however we will always advise auditionees prior to the audition if this is the case. Out of interest, about half of the major roles in the recent Hobart production were precast and all auditionees were advised. Also, LMS openly advised that the male lead in Crazy for You (directed by Danny Gibson) was precast. So while you may not be a fan of precasting, it is nothing new. However, your feedback to Encore is always encouraged. Feel free to contact us direct via email at encoretheatre@hotmail.com We look forward to seeing you audition for LM - I imagine your parents would allow you to do so this time around

As a general rule I'm not a big fan of precasting either if it's a regular thing, but that's certainly not the case with Encore.

Encore Theatre reserve the right to precast any role, however we will always advise auditionees prior to the audition if this is the case. That's fine. Like Lana said precasting is something I'm not a fan of. To me it means that some who would think about auditioning for a show might not because the role they want is already taken. If they then didn't get the role they wanted, but were offered another role that they might take it and the show would be better off. Does that makes sense?!? Out of interest, about half of the major roles in the recent Hobart production were precast and all auditionees were advised. Didn't realsie that - what show was it? Also, LMS openly advised that the male lead in Crazy for You (directed by Danny Gibson) was precast. So while you may not be a fan of precasting, it is nothing new. A bit of disaster that one! Great dancer, lousy singer even with lots of help.

Les Miserables in Hobart (March 2008 produced by Tasmanian Theatre Unit Trust) precast about half of their leads. The show was superb and did sensational box office :-)
