What an AWESOME cast!!! Saw Nicholas in Blood Brothers and thought he was fantastic. Never saw Les Miserables but my mum did and still raves about John De Jong and Di Briffa in it. Can't wait to see the show

Saw Nicholas in Blood Brothers and thought he was fantastic. I was in Blood Brothers and Fiddler on the Roof - he just keeps getting better and better (and is a nice guy too!) Never saw Les Miserables but my mum did and still raves about John De Jong and Di Briffa in it. They were both great - I loved listening to John sing "Bring Him Home" every night. Looks like a pretty good cast - good luck to all involved. Buff Buff

I posted a message on this site yesterday saying how many great shows the LMS have produced..Saw 'Blood Brothers' and as I said ..the cast were fantastic.. especially Tessa Dunstan as Mrs Johnstone and Heidi Cooper as Linda...It's such a pity that 'Oliver" has been cancelled..It would have been a fantastic show and probably will be one day with the LMS behind it. The only big show seems to be 'The Sound of Music'.. By the look of it, they've got a strong cast and production team...good luck to them

I nice little article in the Examiner today about a 10 year old girl (can't remember her name - I don't have the paper in front of me) who gets her mother to drive her 90 mintues each way to rehearsal for Sound of Music. That's called dedication! Buff

There was another article in yesterday's Examiner on James Walker's work on the set. This guy is amazing. Any sets I have seen of his have been outstanding. Almost worth going to a show just to see them. Buff

OMG - I went to the show last night and it was fantastic!!!!!
I have not seem anything this good in Lonnie for years - congratulations to Di Summers on her direction. But I'm biased because she taught my mum to dance ;D
Strong performances all round - Nic Tolputt was a standout in Blood Brothers earlier this year and he is just amazing as Rolf. So was Liesl (Zoe Jensen).
Love the Captain (Daniel Priest) & Maria (Melissa de Jong) and all the children, too.
My mum told me all about Les Miserables from years ago and she hasn't stopped raving about Di Briffa since. Now I know what she's been on about. WOW!! Why doesn't Di do more shows? She's just stunning.
Glad there are still some shows to go, because I'm going again on Final Night if I can get a ticket.

I was talking to a guy who saw the show last night as well and really enjoyed it. He thought Melissa took about 10 mintues to get into her stride but then was fantastic. He loved the kids, particulary the youngest girl. He said she would have got a standing ovation if she had a bow to herself. He also mentioned Di Briffa - she has an amazing voice! Buff

The theatrical review by Marcus Bower was published in the Examiner (Thurs 9/10/2008)
Sound Of Music worth an encore
REVIEW BY MARCUS BOWER 9/10/2008 1:00:00 AM[/b]
LAUNCESTON'S newly formed Encore Theatre Company hit the right note when it presented The Sound Of Music at the Princess Theatre this week.
This family favourite was a musical success for director Di Summers and the entire company. Summers was able to give this oldie but goldie a new and engaging coat of theatrical paint.
For many, Rodgers and Hammerstein's much loved musical is cherished in our collective memory and to Encore's credit its interpretation did not disappoint.
From the opening scene the wonderful nuns of the Nonnberg Abbey sang the Praeludium and the musical standard was set. From there we were taken on a journey that stayed true to the style and convention of this 1959 musical; however, it must be said that the singing tended to overshadow the acting.
That said, the characters grew as the show grew and the cast was able to reach out and connect with the audience.
Melissa de Jong as Maria possessed a delightful mix of genuine warmth and youthful innocence and there was a palpable chemistry between her and the charming Von Trapp children.
Daniel Priest as the gruff and distant Captain Von Trapp began quietly but he too ultimately endeared himself to the crowd for by the end of the show Priest captured and expressed the repressed love and kindness that lay beneath the navy uniform.
Di Briffa's superb voice soared as Mother Abbess and her stirring rendition of Climb Every Mountain was the musical highlight while the Von Trapp children did their very best to steal the show at every turn!
From Zoe Jensen's naive Liesl down to a very cute Gretl confidently played by Lauren Colson, the Von Trapp siblings lifted the show with their colourful and energetic presence.
John de Jong and Sarah Haberle revelled in roles that seemed almost written for them while Patsy Marshall and Dennis Mann proved through the sheer weight of their theatrical personalities that there are no such things as small parts, only small actors!
The orchestra, led by Matt Dudfield, added considerably to the show's success while James Walker's sets were very impressive.
Complimenting the physical look of the show were the marvellous costumes coordinated by Brooke Cooper-Scott that helped establish the musical's visual authenticity and appeal.
All in all, Encore's desire to present high quality non- professional musical theatre in the region was realised with The Sound of Music.
