Audiences are forgiven for expecting a little bit of Kimmy when Gina Riley returns to the stage as Matron "Mama" Morton in the next Australian production of Chicago.
"I don't know if they will be expecting a G-string poking out … I am going to put my own spin on it," Riley said of her role. "[But] I am excited because I am playing a part that is, for me, age appropriate."
In the musical - which last played in Australia in 1999 and is due to open in Brisbane in March before heading to Sydney in May - Riley will be joined by co-stars Caroline O'Connor as Velma Kelly, Sharon Millerchip as Roxie Hart and Craig McLachlan as Billy Flynn.
While both O'Connor and Millerchip have performed in previous productions of the musical, this will be the first major Australian Chicago production since the 2002 Academy Award-winning film.
"I think it can only be good for the show … The film stayed true to the stage production," Millerchip said. "It is a parallel of current events … it is Paris Hilton going to jail, it is Roberta Williams and Underbelly," Riley added.
With rehearsals starting in February, Riley said she planned to spend the summer writing but was reluctant to confirm another series of Kath And Kim for next year. "Jane [Turner] and I are tossing around ideas … we don't like to commit to anything just yet."
