An article I found in the Age talking about the comfort level of theatre seats!
But that's not the only reason why theatre seats seem uncomfortable — they are designed to be a little rough.
Jason Marriner, whose family-run Marriner Theatres owns the Regent, Forum, Princess and Comedy theatres, says slightly uncomfortable seating keeps audiences more alert. Too much room and they might doze off. "The seating is not supposed to be as comfortable or as spacious as a lounge chair," he says. "It's supposed to be more upright and, ideally, you sit closer to the next person because it brings into play what theatre designers call audience cohesion, where they bring the energy of the audience together."
