The Plays
NOT IN FRONT OF THE WAITER
OR
UNDER THE ASPIDISTRA
A private room in a Paris restaurant is
where this delightful musical farce set to
the music of Jacques Offenbach takes
place. A giant aspidistra separates the
two couples who are intent on a night of
romance. Precious comic timing will
abound and the wild emotions will draw
the audience into responding. Gasps,
shock, horror and surprise! This one act
play calls for a vocal quartet of soprano,
alto, tenor and baritone plus a bass the
latter played by the ever watchful waiter
who needs to be old enough to pass as
the ladies father!
So we need a cast of five, with good
singing voices, the ability to read and
learn music, act and have a sense of
comedic timing. The music in itself is
charming, operetta in style, not overly
difficult and all help will be given when
parts are being learned. The ability to
hold a part during the duets, quartets
and quintets are essential.
At auditions we will need to hear you
sing, act and move!!
CHAMBER MUSIC
By absurdist playwright Arthur
Kopit is set in 1938 and concerns 8
famous women from different histori-
cal periods who all are
interned in the same insane asylum.
The women are (or at least believe
they are) author Gertrude Stein,
matyr Joan of Arc, Activist Susan B.
Anthony, politician Queen Isabella of
Spain, Constance Mozart, pilop Ame-
lia Earhart, silent-film actress Pearl
White and explorer Osa Johnson.
They have come together to repre-
sent the women of the asylum in
planning for an attack they believe is
soon to come from the men’s ward.
Cast required 8 women and 1 man
any age.
THE FLESH GAME
This lively comedy for women takes a light-hearted look at the perennial
problem of those extra inches! Set in a regimented Health Farm, presided over by
the humourless and power-loving Nurse Burton, its guests respond to its structure
like naughty schoolchildren. They all have their different reasons for being there,
be it to fit into a wedding dress, help find a replacement for
ex-husband, to win a bet. Only Jane continues to burn calories to the bitter end,
although not quite as the management intended!
Cast required: 7 women (of various sizes!!) ages from late twenties to fifties.
