I saw this play in Brisbane in the early 1980's. It was very powerful and had a long lasting effect on me.......A difficult subject well presented through a great script.
Whose Life is it Anyway? a play by Brian Clark explores the argument between the rights of the patient and the ethical concerns of the medical profession.
It is a debate about the ethics of one person´s right to choose whether to live or die.
The play is based on a sculptor who, after a motor accident, is left a quadriplegic. Appalled at the prospect of a life in which he has no control of anything, he pleads with hospital authorities to help him die. When they refuse, he takes them to court.
Whose Life is it Anyway? was a 1980´s Hollywood movie starring Richard Dreyfuss and directed by John Badham. More reccently the play was produced on Broadway with Kim Catrall of Sex in the City fame taking on a revised female version of the sculptor.
The play asks the audience to explore this provocative issue, which will strike a chord with many. It will make you laugh out loud at times but it could also make you cry. However, the lead character does not want pity but, like all of us, just wants to be heard.
