Andrew Lloyd Webber’s spectacular successful musical The Phantom of the Opera is being played in Taipei at Taipei Arena for a two-week, beginning on 10 July, 2009.
Lloyd Webber and his team are preparing to produce a long-expected sequel to the 23-year-old mega-musical, named Love never dies. In the same time the Phantom of opera show continues to draw big audiences around the world, with productions currently on stage in New York, London, Buenos Aires, Budapest, Copenhagen, Warsaw and the Venetian Resort in Las Vegas, as well as a national touring show in the US. The Phantom is one of the most rival productions of cinematic blockbusters like Titanic. For second time the Phantom has been hosted to Taipei. A production by The Really Useful Company Asia Pacific, featuring American Brad Little in the title role, sold out a record 63 performances at the National Theater in 2006. Each performance of this mega-musical breaks its own records, with 230 costumes, 22 scene changes, 281 candles and 250kg of dry ice.
First time showcasted in London in 1986 and on Broadway in 1988, winner of both London’s Olivier Award and Broadway’s Tony as best musical, Phantom is the longest-running show in Broadway history. Some of the record fitures and facts that set from Phantom are the amount of cost of the 1988 Broadway production - $8 million, people who have seen the New York production - over 12.5 million, Total box office of the Broadway production - $675 million. Total audience of U.S productions, tours and Broadway is 40 milion and original cast albums sold – more than 40 million. It is marked that Phantom has been showcasted by more than 80 million people in 124 cities in 25 countries, and the total worldwide gross is now in excess of $5 billion. The musical is a herald of new ideas and this brings it fifty major theatre awards including Olivier Awards, the most recent being the 2002 Oliver Audience Award for Most Popular Show, an Evening Standard Award, Tony Awards including Best Musical, Drama Desk Awards and 3 Outer Critic Circle Awards.
The musical tells the melodrama story of a disfigured man puts on mask and walks around the basement of an old opera house in Paris, falling in love with an innocent chorine and swearing vengeance on anyone who gets in the way of his winning her heart. It's all set to swoony tunes like "Think of Me," "The Music of the Night" and, of course, "The Phantom of the Opera."
On June 24 the musicals celebrates its third anniversary on the Las Vegas scene. In the same time it will start the Phantom Fans Week which will bring exciting experience around the globe.
