Jersey Boys is documentary-style musicals based on the lives of one of the most successful 1960s rock ‘n roll groups, the Four Seasons. Four boys from the wrong side of the tracks became one of the biggest American pop music sensations of all times: the four seasons. Winner of the 2006 Tony Award for Best Musical, Jersey Boys tells the story of how Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons went from being unknown New Jersey kids to international pop superstars. The show features over 30 beautifully sung tunes, including “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry” and “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You.”
Jersey Boys is one of the most entertaining shows, which is indeed high praise when you consider that normally many people finds musicals boring and tedious and usually see them as a collection of corny songs strung together by contrived stories. People went to see Jersey Boys because they like the music, and they'll be entertained by the telling of the story, which is done through an effective mix of both dialogue and song. Jersey Boys also provides a view of how city teenagers grew up in the 1950s and 1960s and what it was like to break into the rock and roll business in those days. Jersey boys wrote their own songs, invented their own sounds and sold 175 million records worldwide - all before they were 30!” These guys would put bands like ‘N Sync and the Backstreet Boys to shame. The New York Post raved that Jersey Boys is “too good to be true! It’s terrific.” Jersey Boys ticket sales have set records in New York City and tickets for the Jersey Boys tour have been selling fast. Unlike the recent Broadway flops, this show has the advantage of featuring singers that actually sound like the singers they are portraying and a technology-enhanced band that approximates the original sound of their music.
Jersey Boys is based on a book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice and premiered at the LaJolla Playhouse in LaJolla, California on October 5, 2004 and ran through January 16, 2005. Jersey Boys won four 2006 Tony Awards, Best Musical, Best Actor (John Lloyd Young), Best Featured Actor (Christian Hoff), and Best Lighting Design (Howell Binkley).
The musical was produced in 2005 on Broadway, 2006 in North American Tour, 2007 in Chicago, 2008 in Las Vegas, 2008 in West End, 2008 in Toronto, 2009 in Melbourne. One of the most successful Broadway shows in recent memory, Jersey Boys has embarked on a national tour with stops in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Raleigh, NC, North York, ON, Boston, MA Washington, DC Detroit, MI and many other cities. Of course Jersey Boys is still playing in New York City and figures to be a Broadway fixture for years to come.
