www.smh.com.au/news/arts/producing-a-right-song-and-dance/2005/07/10/1120934123938.html?oneclick=trueIt's a SMH article, so you might not be able to read the whole thing, but this was interesting. Four big projects are on the books, including a limited season of Fiddler on the Roof, starring Topol, at the Capitol Theatre in September, Dusty the Musical at the Arts Centre in Melbourne in December, an international military tattoo at the SuperDome and the Broadway production of La Cage aux Folles at the Theatre Royal next year.I hadn't heard about La Cage yet. Should be interesting.

There is so much wrong with that article, but I choose to focus here: "These bracing times require our artists to provide happy, uplifting art. If only we could take a show like The Lion King and replicate it around the world." They did take it and replicate it around the world. Otherwise it wouldn't be here. James

It's strange that Sydney is mentioned as the capital of musicals in Australia, and that Dusty is "evidence" of that. Didn't Dusty start off in Melbourne? I wouldn't say one is better than the other, because generally if a show starts in Sydney and does well, it goes to Melbourne and vice versa. I like that quote. Buff

I think he's referring to the population of the city and the amount of theatres - being at one point we had a musical at the Lyric, Theatre Royal and Capitol Theatre not including the STCs, etc. That's why I think he pointed out Sydney over Melbourne. Then again it's John Frost and he likes to change his mind every 5 secs

I think he was referring to the fact that he was talking to a Sydney paper. Putting Australia (which in reality is one market), in the same sentence as Broadway or the West End in ludicrous.
On one end of the scale we seemingly can't afford to put on the biggest show of the decade (Wicked) and on the other end, the West End is putting on a major revival of Sunday in the Park With George. That will absolutely never happen here either. The only shows that we see are the ones with a ready made audience, plus whatever the state theatre companies decide to tempt us with. The last exception was, I'd say, Man of La Mancha.
As for comparing the two cities, it wasn't that long ago that we had three major shows on here in Melbourne at the same time. It just ebbs and flows, that's all. But it's not the market that ebbs and flows like that article says, it's the industry.
I also think that "bastardised" is the wrong word to use for a musical. To bastardise is to debase or corrupt. The combination of artforms in musicals is a positive thing.

www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,21985,21075602-28957,00.html Congratulations to Ian Stenlake and Rachael Beck on the birth of their baby girl! Action man
SHOWBIZ couple Ian Stenlake and Rachael Beck are the proud parents of a baby girl.
The birth added some real-life drama to the Gold Coast set of Channel 9's new action series, Sea Patrol, on Monday when its star, Stenlake, dashed to Brisbane airport.
He got to Beck in Sydney just in time to cut the umbilical cord of their first child, Tahlula.
He stayed with them overnight and flew back at 6am the next day.
Nine is shooting 66 scenes this week, of which the new dad is in 65.
