Just saw the boy from Oz at the Princess Theatre in Launceston Tasmania. I was a little disappointed with the first half - except for young Peter Allen, but the second half blew me away. I just loved it! The performance by Matthew Garwood who played Greg Connell, Peter's partner was sensational. Hard to believe he's home grown! I would like to be as sure of winning tats lotto as I am of this young man going a long way in the entertainment industry. He has an amazing voice!
"I Still Call Australia Home" made me cry.

I saw Boy From Oz on Saturday night and thoroughly enjoyed it. There were a few standouts - Patrick, of course, holding the whole show together. In talking with the group I was with we couldn't come up with anyone who could have done it better. Kerri Gay was amazing as Judi Garland. The best I've seen her perform - it was as if that role was written for her. Matt Garwood's singing of "I honestly love you" was beautiful. He sang the song well but he acted it through his voice as well. Shelley Spencer is still the pocket rocket I remember treading the boards with in "Anything Goes" - what an amazing voice! So much power to burn it's scary!! Mrs Buff was in tears listening to "I still call Australia home". Just a small thing I was grateful for was when the Australian flag come down it didn't touch the stage floor. I'm a bit of a "flag ettiquette" freak and that pleased me (I don't know whether it was deliberate or not, but thank you anyway!) The three backing singers (Nat, Alana & Melissa) were great - I loved their blending of voices. Special mention of the set & lights - stunning! And that show stealing Stage Manager!!! My only criticism was some issues with the sound - the bass guitar overpowered a number of times even to the stage of feeding back, mikes were sometimes late in coming on so you missed parts of songs (particularly with the trio) or dialogue, and a couple of times the ensemble were very hard to hear. But if that's the worst I can come up with (and I'm pretty picky) then the show has to be pretty good! ETA: The show's programme was fantastic - best I've seen in the local scene. Having "action shots" from the show really adds to the professional feel and makes looking back at a later stage much more interesting. Buff

Yes, the flag was deliberate! At one point it looked like it might have had to touch the floor to hide everyone's feet, but I'm glad they worked it the way they did.
Good to hear you liked the show!
