It is my pleasure to inform you that a concert version of the musical FLOYD COLLINS will be staged on Monday May 3rd at 7.30pm at City Recital Hall Angel Place
FLOYD COLLINS by Adam Guettel and Tina Landau is one of the most powerful, original, quirky and musically demanding musicals ever written.
FLOYD COLLINS was one of the more adventurous musicals that Kookaburra had programmed in 2007 and now producers Meredith Shaw Pty Ltd (Stuart Maunder and Anne-Maree McDonald) will at last bring this not to be missed event to Sydney audiences.
Friend and collaborater Anne-Maree McDonald will be Musical Director.
Many of the original Australian cast and band members will join me on stage including Michael Falzon (currently starring in We Will Rock You in the UK), Trish Crowe, Phillip Hinton, Queenie van de Zandt, Nick Simpson Deeks, James Millar, Peter Meredith, Elliot Weston, Andrew Conaghan (new to the cast) and Phillip Dodd.
Guettels exalted and eclectic musical lineage (grandson of Richard Rodgers, son of composer Mary Rodgers, protege of Oscar Hammerstein) inspires him to juxtapose bluegrass, folk, Broadway and jazz against opera and contemporary classical dissonance. The result is a dynamic and rare mix of musical styles.
Stephen Sondheim describes FLOYD COLLINS as dazzling, and The Riddle Song which concludes Act 1 has been officially listed by Sondheim as a song he wished he had written himself.
FLOYD COLLINS in Concert is loosely based on Floyd Collins, a happy go lucky but adventurous gold digging caver from Kentucky who finds himself firmly trapped beneath the earth after a landfall.
The combination of 13 performers, and a band of 9 including string quartet, banjo, harmonicas, guitars, electric keyboards and grand piano, makes this work a unique musical and dramatic tour de force.
I do hope you can make it.
I can assure you it will be a thrilling night in the theatre.
See you there.
Aye yours
Peter Cousens
