I hadn't really thought much about the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony being look-forwardable, but if what I saw today is any indication, it might be actually entertaining. (Which would put it one up on the Athens Olympics.) I'm a volunteer for the games, and today they had "TEAM 2006: Unite" at Telstra Dome for staff and volunteers. The name alone was reason enough to prepare to be bored. I was expecting speech after speech, motivational talks and perhaps a forced mexican wave. As it turned out, I was right on all counts But what I wasn't expecting is to be entertained. They had a huge screen (more than three times the size of the screens at the ground), which was useful for close ups on some all-right performances. All you saw on the news was some guy singing the obligatory "Celebrate good times, come on." And you'd expect the remainder to be just as corny, but Rhona Burchmore did a number about Melbourne that didn't make me feel embarrased to be Melburnian, and there were other reasonable songs, one of which sung by a guy who I'm almost certain was Kane Alexander. (I didn't catch the name, and it's been so long.) So put a tape in the VCR on March 15. James
