Here's the list of winners from this year's Helpmann Awards (Australia's Tonys). Congratulations to all of them, especially Cabaret, which did extremely well. www.helpmannawards.com/2003winners.aspAnd apparently most of the Australian cast of Les Mis did a special reunion performance of One Day More, followed by a comment from Simon Burke along the lines of "Philip Quast couldn't make it tonight because he's in London working, Anthony Warlow couldn't make it tonight because he's in Cremorne." So sweet of him to put it so nicely. ~Julia

I'm also confused how Anthony didn't win best actor Buff

Yeah, please explain this Les Mis thing, (I'm a bit slow, if you haven't already noticed.) And considering the things AW has been in, I'm surprised he was pipped by Todd, (although Todd is still very talented) Quite interesting....

I think Simon Burke was trying to have a go at both of them, without saying so outright. Yes, I noticed that Man of La Mancha didn't win anything, not even lighting, and I thought the lighting was fantastic. And Marina didn't get anything either. Maybe they wanted to give someone else a chance ~Julia

The critics I read stoned MoLM for its lighting. They said it was too dark.
I thought it was perfect - it's a bit of a dark musical! It suited it perfectly!

!!!! I'm sure Anthony and Phillip would have made it if their shedule allowed, and besides...they are too good for the Helpmann awards anyway. That guy sounds nasty, *insert rude word here*

I loved the way they did the lighting for the courtyard scenes, and the church, and that chessboard bit... And it's not as if it's exactly a bright happy musical.
Watch out, Eowyn. That's the attitude Burke was talking about when he said that they weren't there. They aren't 'too good' for anything, because they're not that sort of person. But in the same way, going to the Helpmanns wouldn't have been 'stooping to their level', either.

That's what I was thinking too - especially the chessboard was memorable. I wonder if the fact that Man of La Mancha was the only nominated show I saw would affect my judgement Naaahhh Buff

Sorry Julia, didn't mean to offend. Considering that they are performers I know they'd love to get up on stage where ever possible (not in a showy off kind of way, in a 'performing is my passion and I'll do it where ever I can' And to tell you the truth, I didn't realise it was all theatre, I'm been so tired lately that I don't really read things properly, I'm so silly. So yeah, musical theatre performers performing at an award ceremony for musical theatre excellence does make alot more sense than what I thought. So yes, apologies for portraying Warlow and Quast as snobs, we all know they aren't, (Aussie actors never are, just some of those Americans.)
