I need to get some character shows for Les Mis, but I've never needed any before. Would they have them at normal shoe shops (and would the people there know what I'm talking about), or do I need to go to a specialty shop?

Can't say I've heard of character shoes. Do you mean shoes that your character would wear? If that's the case then your best bet would be op-shops. They tend to have older styled shoes (plus they are not as clean and polished) Buff

I think character shoes are made specifically for dancing, like tap shoes but without the taps...okay not really like taps. They are usually tan are a pretty neutral colour and I think it's just so everyone on stage has the same looking shoes. www.dance4less.com/character_shoes.htmThe website above has some pics of them. They are usually about $40, but it depends the quality you get. You'll probably have to go to a dancey type shop to get those I think, I've never bought any myself but my sister dances.

I'm assuming character shoes are chorus shoes, which is what we have to get.. If so, try looking in the paper under dance shoes.. perhaps leave a 'wanted to buy' message at a few dance schools with your shoe size. Also try op shops, sometimes they have them. Don't get them new unless you absolutely have to!
I learned most of this at rehearsal last night, I'm not actually that smart. *g*

I don't know if you still want to know, but...
Character shoes ARE chorus shoes - they can be tan, but most of the ones I've seen have been black - check what colour you're meant to get Talissa before you buy them!
They are kind of like Mary Jane shoes with a slight heal (closed toes, with a buckle or bit of elastic over them)

To get character shoes you need to go to a dance store. They are somewhat expensive. I have already gone through 3 pairs
