Oooh the drama! Much as I'd love to gossip, I probably shouldn't so I'll state the facts.. there was a public meeting recently to vote.. most of the committee who've been doing their jobs for years were voted out, including Danny Gibson. Dr Harry Cooper, our patron, has resigned. It's all rather dramatic and angsty at the moment. *g* No idea what's going to happen or how this'll affect the Society. Nunsense is apparently... interesting, as well...
And that's it. Probably in the wrong forum, Julia can move it.*g*

Ah, gotta love theatre company dramas. They're never half-done, almost as if everyone thinks they have to be just as dramatic off-stage as on.
And yep, this is a good place for the post. And I can't be bothered moving it anywhere

The meeting was the AGM held Thur 25 Sept. During the year there was some infighting. Two factions developed on the executive and one of the factions got voted out. There is a new president (that's three in three years!), secretary (She had been there for a while and was excellent) and librarian (Danny's old position). I was speaking to the new president on Sunday and he wants to pull everyone together and stop the in fighting (Good luck to him). The fight even hit the Launceston & Hobart newspapers Click here for Hobart MercuryBuff

The continuing saga. Last night I received a letter from the society's new president explaing to all members what happen at the meeting. Then in this morning's Examiner Newspaper was a letter to the editor from Dr Harry Cooper explaining why he wasn't happy and resigned. To me a lot of it was procedual stuff (committee members positions not officially declared vacant; members nominated for positions not asked whether they accepted the nominations and being allowed to address the meeting; scrutineers of the ballots just picked on the night and the ballot papers just being scraps of paper torn up on the night) His other concern was that the Publicity Officer who was elected now lives in Hobart! This was the person who caused the factions I mentioned in an earlier post. It would seem Harry sent a copy of the letter to the society and that is what the president responded to. The main problem I see was that it was not a professional business meeting and handled as such. Hopefully they'll learn from this and get it right from now on. Buff

Hello Buff & Lana,
What a shame, Buff, that you choose to comment in such a way on a meeting that you did NOT ATTEND! And I know you did not attend the meeting, because I did.
There are two sides to every story and from reading your posts you have definitely availed yourself of only half the available information.
The group overwhemingly (more than 90%) chose to move forward with a mix of old and new faces.
Perhaps there is a hint of sour grapes in your posts?

Hi mitzi, Thanks for your comment, but as you can see this post is quite old and the topic is dead and buried.
I don't think either of us hold anything against LMS. I know I don't.

Quite, correct - I didn't attend the meeting. The information I was relaying was from the various newspaper reports/letters to the editor (which I acknowledged) and from conversations with the new president and a letter to all members from the president. There are two sides to every story and from reading your posts you have definitely availed yourself of only half the available information. I put all the information I had to hand and gave an opinion. If the information I had is only half of what is available and I've got everything totally wrong then I will apologise unreservedly. If I have missed anything, feel free to set me straight Perhaps there is a hint of sour grapes in your posts? No. I count Danny as a friend, but things like this happen all the time, and not just in theatre. BTW, the only reason I didn't audition for 42nd Street was because I had to have surgery on my knee and would have been able to do any dancing (which is kind of a prerequisite for the show ) Please don't think I hate/dislike the Society - that's far from the truth. The two shows I have done with them I have fantastic memories of. Buff

Hello Buff,
I am sure if you approached the company for more information about the AGM last September you would find:
- Issues regarding misappropriation of company funds - Issues regarding withholding company property (still current and in the hands of the company lawyer) - Issues regarding certain members trying to modify the constitution to suit their own ends - Certain ill-informed 'letters to the editor' were written by people who were NOT PRESENT if an effort to sway public opinion if favour of their friends
I could go on, but what's the point?
Glad to hear you don't hate/dislike the company and do have fantastic memories of your shows.
I know they have announced their shows for the next 2 years and it would be a shame not to consider working with the only Launceston community theatre group that is presenting musical theatre on a regular basis.
Future shows are:
July 2004 - 42nd Street November December 2004 - Nuncrackers July 2005 - The Music Man Nov/Dec 2005 - A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum August 2006 - Les Miserables (a pro-am production)

When I spoke to the President just after the AGM, he didn't mention any of those issues. I know they have announced their shows for the next 2 years and it would be a shame not to consider working with the only Launceston community theatre group that is presenting musical theatre on a regular basis. The way I decide what show to do is not based on who's producing the show. Things like - the time I have available, is the show any good, do I have other commitments at that time, do I have any physical limitations (eg knee surgery before a dance show!). Have no doubt that I will consider very carefully what shows, if any, I do. Buff

I think this thread has done it's dash, so I will lock it. Mitzi, if you have anything else to add that would be constructive, PM me and I will unlock it. Buff
