Ok, we've all seen them. Shows that left you thinking 'What were they thinking?' Here are a few to start the ball rolling...
Eureka! Good idea very badly executed. Witches of Eastwick. Sorry, actresses moving (very) slowly, hanging on visble wires over an audience just doesn't cut it. Oh, What A Night! Why bother? We discover Marcia can't act, and Garry Sweet can neither sing nor dance. Man of La Mancha (revival) First, take two ill matched leads... Oliver! (revival) Firstly take a charming musical and over produce it. It's the first time I've ever seen this show when I wished Nancy would be knocked off so we could all go home! So many good songs ruined. e.g. Who Will Buy?
What are your choices?

Surely you can't all think EVERYTHING is(was) wonderful?

Witches of Eastwick. Sorry, actresses moving (very) slowly, hanging on visble wires over an audience just doesn't cut it. When I saw it two of them got half way up the procenium and the other didn't move. I loved the show.... Oliver! (revival) So many good songs ruined. e.g. Who Will Buy? I'm curious what you're comparing it to. I love Who Will Buy? from the movie and had no objection to the Mackintosh production. But then I did have a crush on the rose seller at the time. I wasn't a huge fan of Eureka, but I pretty much said my piece at the time. I can't say why you'd bother with Oh, What a Night, cos I didn't. I've only really disliked musicals on film, which really isn't fair to judge them on, but I'm not in a hurry to see Superstar, Chicago or A Chorus Line for that reason. I'm sure I will though. James

My reference to Oliver! and Who Will Buy?, they stopped the song mid way to do some hokey puppet thing, thereby ruining the momentum and conclusion/ building of the number. Even when the girl that was Nancy was singing As long As He Needs Me actors came on the stage and started stacking chairs around her thereby diverting your attention away from her while you watch the chair stacking. I guess my main gripe was how it was more about the set and less about the story. Like most Cam Mac shows.
Have you ever noticed in every production of Oliver! that the boy who plays Oliver has a terribly plummy accent, even though he has spent all his life in the orphanage? What is that about? I saw Oh, What a Night ! the first time around on comps.
Regarding movie musicals, Chicago is worth seeing as it is faithful to the original source. The best movie musical of all time (in my opinion) is The Umbrella's of Cherbourg. The Michel Legrand score is brilliant...and it is now available on DVD. If you've not seen it do yourself a favour.

Gosh, I saw it twice and was right down the front both times, and my eyes were glued to her the whole time for both times - I never noticed anything else going on, not in the song, nor the reprise, either time.

You know, I never thought about that before. Perhaps a more accurate accent would make him seem less sympathetic. Weird.... James
