It's such a horrible thing to happen - and especially to countries which have to struggle so hard to pick themselves up (it would be much easier - though no less emotionally devastating - in a richer country). I know a lot of people here can't afford it because you're in the arts. But please, if you can afford it, make a donation. Even if it's $2. Everything will help these people. You can even make donations online now. great thread. I agree ... out of all places to happen i mean c'mon! I think we are so lucky, Indonesia isnt that far away from Aus ... and thanks for those links. Me and my parents will be donating. It's a worthy cause. They need all the help they can get at the moment.
Again - great thread.

What gets me is the government warning people not to go to Indonesia because of terrorism, and then this happening.
It's chilling to think that something like this can happen, though. The wave reached all the way to Africa! And one that size doesn't come from a slight shudder.

Wasn't the earthquake 9.0, or at least 8.7, on the Richter scale? That's like...insane.
I mean, over here in America, we didn't notice anything but what's on the news - no earthquake, no tsunamis. We're damned lucky, and I think that Bush should be helping more than he is. *sigh* I feel so bad for all those people.

And I've heard that it slightly shifted the earth's orbit as well and as such has made the day 3 microseconds shorter

Yeah the earthquake was 9 on the Richter scale.
Apparently the crack was a kilometre of earth (or so) long and it shifted something like 30 metres. That's a lot of movement...
