Has anyone out there tried some of those videos or interactive software lessons for improving your singing? Do those things work?

I'm not exactly the expert here. Let's just say I could never played the scarecrow in the wizard of oz, cos the crows actually would be scared, but I have seen the stuff you're talking about.
I'd say it's like anything. The stuff they will tell you is sure to be largely true, but you can't ask clarifying questions, you don't get feedback, and it's not tailored to your voice.
Also, it depends on what you already know (ie if it's at your level) and if you're dedicated enough to do the work if you don't have a human teacher.

but you can't ask clarifying questions, you don't get feedback, and it's not tailored to your voice. And that's the key. The video can't hear you sing and tell you what to do to improve. If you are just starting out, it might be a good starting point, but if you are serious about singing better, a (live) teacher is the only way to go. I'd been singing for years, but decided last year to have some formal lessons. My teacher picked up several things straight away that I needed to change, and within weeks, people were noticing the difference. Buff
