By now, you probably all know about the Melbourne Cabaret Festival, which is getting ready to spread its wings for the first time. But this isn’t the only first for Melbourne this winter. Also about to launch is the inaugural International Puppet Carnival, which runs for one week only 26th June - 2nd July 2006. Timed to coincide with the second week of the school holidays, it’s a perfect family day at the carnival, with rides, games, workshops, and even a fortune teller! Oh, and of course plenty of puppets. Running in six venues around Federation Square, the performances are scheduled so that no matter which show you’ve just seen, another will begin within ten minutes, so a great, full day to keep the kids (and adults) entertained. The fun continues after dark, with the puppets showing their ‘funny, sad, sexy, dark, wicked, politically incorrect, bitingly satirical’ side (Sound a bit like Avenue Q, anyone? ) as the same venues, and some of the same puppets, show their naughtier, twisted side. A perfect example of this is in the highlight act of the after dark programme, Puppet Burlesque, which includes puppet strip tease and bovine disembowelment. Having been lucky enough to have seen a couple of glimpses of rehearsals, and many of the puppets themselves, I strongly urge anyone in Melbourne to go along. It’s bound to be a marvellous carnival, and a most welcome addition to the Melbourne festival calendar. Website: internationalpuppetcarnival.com.au

And if anyone knows an 8-13 year old whose a bit of a handful, send them to the Puppet Magic workshop on the Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Friday. Why not the Thursday? That's when I'll be there. James

My friend and I went to a Puppet Carnival show - One Night the Dog. I liked it. I think we were the oldest people there though...

Ohhhhhh, I didn't see that one. I heard good things.
One that I saw and absolutely loved was Tadpole. It was a kids' one obviously but had definite universal appeal. And so brilliantly done! Both as far as puppetry and design go. Loved it!
