"The Producers"
June 2003 Report

Broadway’s most winning award show The Producers is to be produced in Melbourne Australia in 2004. This the show which to date has won 12 Tony Awards, two Grammys and 11 Drama Desk Awards.

Australian producer John Frost confirmed that he and co-producer had secured the Australian rights to the show.

This is the first time Mel Brook’s musical comedy The Producers has been produced outside the USA . It will open at Melbourne ’s Princess Theatre in April 2004.

A definitely political and racist incorrect production featuring 18 songs which are likely to upset Australia ’s multicultural fringe. The Germans, blacks, and elderly get hit with it.

The Producers is about a hard up producer Max Bialystock who hatches a deal with his accountant to stage the all time worst musical Springtime for Hitler, see it flop and disappear with the investors money. Much to everyone’s surprise it becomes a massive hit.

Possible choices to play the leads are Academy Award winner Geoffrey Rush, Tom Burlinson and Reg Livermore

Will wonders ever cease? I'd say this one will be touring. It's playing at the Princess, which is where PotO and (I think) Les Mis played, so it's a fairly big one. ~Julia

The show's rumoured to be coming to Sydney after it has a pretty long run in the standards of musicals these days. It'll move up here along with Hairspray.

Considering they thought they couldn't stage anything in Sydney since Mamma Mia was at the Lyric and the Lion King opens at the Capitol - since it's been announced that MM will be closing in 15 weeks time it means the theatre will come available at the end of the year - so we might see a musical in there after all
