The world premiere of Richard Maltby, Jr. and David Shire's latest musical, Take Flight, will be part of the Adelaide Cabaret Festival this summer.

The Australia festival, which runs June 11-26, will present Maltby and Shire's new musical in a concert setting June 25 at the Dunstan Playhouse. According to production notes, the New York-bound Take Flight is about "the spirit of invention in us all, the obscure as well as the famous, and that it is just as noble in those who fail as in those who succeed. It is about flying, about the invention of the airplane, about creativity, and about the human need to take risks."

Songs from Take Flight have been presented in the States at Charlotte Rep and the Eugene O'Neill Theatre Center. Among the performers who have interpreted tunes from the musical include Daniel Jenkins, Clarke Thorell, Christiane Noll, Alan Campbell, Brent Barrett, Meg Tolin, John Jellison and Ann Arvia. The Down Under production will include several Australian musical theatre stars as well as the 20-strong Adelaide Art Orchestra and a 10-voice chorus.

Maltby and Shire will figure prominently in this year's cabaret festival. In addition to the Take Flight concert, the festival will also offer their hit revue Closer Than Ever June 19, "An Afternoon with Maltby & Shire" June 20 and a "Master Class" June 26.

Maltby and Shire are the songwriters whose urbane Off-Broadway revues, Starting Here, Starting Now and Closer Than Ever, are beloved by fans of the form. Cabaret singers have plucked songs from the shows to present in nightspots around the world. Maltby and Shire also collaborated on the book musicals Baby and big. Baby is currently being presented at New Jersey's Paper Mill Playhouse with a cast led by Michael Rupert, Carolee Carmello, Norm Lewis, La Chanze, Moeisha McGill and Chad Kimball.

Shire has scored motion pictures ("Norma Rae"), and Maltby conceived and staged Aint' Misbehavin' and contributed lyrics to Miss Saigon. Maltby co-directed the Tony Award-winning Fosse.

ETA: How did you find that cast list out for TF? I've been trying to find one for ages without luck.

WHAT is it about flying that continues to hold earth-bound mortals' imagination?

And elevates those who rise above that imagining to become superhuman in our eyes?

That's the theme of legendary Broadway musical theatre duo, lyricist Richard Maltby Jr. and composer David Shire's latest and most uplifting project Take Flight which makes its world premiere flight at the Dunstan Playhouse on Friday at 7pm.

"There's something about flying that makes heroes of ordinary people, certainly in the case of the Wright Brothers, and Amelia Earhart and Charles Lindbergh became instant international celebrities,'' Mr Maltby said.

"None of these people stood out from the crowd until they climbed into the cockpit: The Wright brothers ran a bicycle shop, Earhart was a complete unknown plucked out of obscurity by publisher George Putnam and Lindbergh had been kicked out of college.''

It is an amazing coup for the Cabaret Festival to give Adelaide audiences the first glimpse of a musical that is destined for Broadway.

Maltby and Shire are best known for musicals like Baby, and revues of their songs like Starting Here, Starting Now and especially Closer Than Ever.

Maltby is also directing the world premiere of Take Flight with a stellar cast including David Harris and Eddie Perfect as the Wright Brothers, Tamsin Carroll as Earhart, Simon Burke as Putnam and Spencer McLaren as Lindbergh.

Just happened to be searching the net for information about "Take Flight" and found this site...

I took part in the Adelaide Cabaret Festival presentation of this show last week (as an ensemble member... and with the very teeny tiny role of Ray Page -- Charles Lindbergh's (Spencer's) first flight instructor).

For those of you who missed it, it is a GREAT show. The music is awesome... Quite complex and textured, but with some real "Broadway" moments.

The audience really got into it. Even my parents (who are not Broadway musical types) LOVED the show.

Suffice to say, it was a pleasure to take part in this production... And work with all the wonderful people involved ;D.

Now I've got to get out of Adelaide and do MORE!!!
