Closer Than Ever
One show that IS a must see for this year's Adelaide Cabaret Festival is the world premiere of the concert version of Maltby and Shire's Closer Than Ever.
A cast of Australia's finest music theatre performers will bring the world premiere of the staged concert version of Maltby and Shire's musical, Closer Than Ever, to life in the Dunstan Playhouse on for ONE NIGHT ONLY Saturday 19 June for the Adelaide Cabaret Festival.
Closer Than Ever premiered at New York's off-Broadway Cherry Lane Theatre over a decade ago and immediately became the darling of a host of New York's toughest critics. It is an anthology of songs and sketches about the vicissitudes of life. The songs are about love and loss, family and friends, parents and children, spouses and lovers. It is a powerful and witty observation of the times we live in.
Richard Maltby will direct Closer Than Ever with musical director Caroline Humphries.
Accompanied by the Festival's Cat Scratch Band the all-star cast includes:
Simon Burke has had much success in films and television as well as on the stage. His major stage roles have included Raoul in Phantom of the Opera in London, Marius in Les Miserables in Sydney, Anything Goes and Falsettos in Australia, and the title role in Leonardo in Oxford. He has also starred in Australian television drama series such as Brides of Christ, Scales of Justice, Water Rats and as one of the most popular presenters on ABC TV's Play School.
Carolyn Ferrie is a versatile performer, who has sung in varied concerts; from opera to jazz to musical theatre include roles in Albert Herring, Fiddler on the Roof, Sweeney Todd and Sydney Stories. Carolyn performs regularly in children's theatre and TV, such as Here's Humphrey, and her voice is heard in thousands of households as Dorothy the Dinosaur.
Tony McGill is one of Australia's leading show musicians. He has been Musical Director and accompanist for many Australian stars including Marina Prior, Hugh Jackman, Nancye Hayes, Rob Guest, Rhonda Burchmore, Peter Cousens, Toni Lamond and Jane Rutter. Tony has been Assistant Conductor on numerous musicals including The Phantom of the Opera, Sunset Boulevard, Anything Goes, Mack and Mabel, Sugar Babies, Baby and Kiss Me Kate. He is also an actor, and his onstage credits include The Secret Garden, 42nd Street, Annie, Hello Dolly, Amadeus, Elegies and A Chorus of Disapproval. Tony is also part of Australia's premier cabaret trio Combo Fiasco, who will be performing their final concert at the Adelaide Cabaret Festival.
Spencer McLaren became a national identity playing the role of Richie Blake in the television series The Secret Life of Us. He has worked in music theatre and starred in a number of productions including West Side Story, Cats and Beauty and The Beast. He played the role of Ren McCormick in Footloose at the Capitol Theatre in Sydney and his most recent musical venture was his own highly successful one-man show Spencer McLaren - Live At The Chapel.
Kaye Tuckerman is quickly becoming one of Australia's most sought after cabaret artists. She has appeared in Nick Enright's award-winning Australian musical The Boy From Oz, and toured internationally with Les Miserables. She has also performed supporting roles in Buddy, Jesus Christ Superstar, South Pacific, The Sign Of The Seahorse, The Importance Of Being Earnest, and the feature film Matrix - Reloaded.
Anne Wood was part of the original Melbourne cast of CATS. She stayed with CATS for the first Australian national tour playing Jellylorum and Griddlebone before joining the German company. What was originally intended as a short six months in Hamburg, eventually became six successful years working in London and Germany. More recently, Anne spent two and a half years playing the lead role of Donna in the Australian smash hit production of MAMMA MIA! and received a Green Room Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her performance.
With special guest Adelaide Cabaret Festival Patron Nancye Hayes OAM who will sing Another Wedding Song with composer David Shire.
