Hey Folks! I was also there on Sunday night so I thought I might share a few things that I thought!
Hooray for Martin Croft for an absolutely wonderful night of Sondheim standards ;D
I must admit after seeing the last few years worth of hats off concerts i wasn't expecting a lot...(did anyone see lasts years effort?) but i was pleasantly surprised.
Highlights for me...and probably for everyone else were: Queenie Van De Zandt's Not a Day Goes By You Could Drive a Person Crazy Chloe Dallimore's Tick Tock - Blair had a great go in Barcelona but i think someone should have given him the full script to read through... The Little Things You Do Together Putting it Together (even if there were scripts in hands?) Unworthy of your Love Andrew Koblar - WOW! Robyn Arthur and Anne Phelan were excellent... and my personal favourite...Sunday...SPINE TINGLING....
The only semi weak link was Amanda Muggleton (sorry Amanda fans) who didn't (couldn't?) hit the top notes and screamed through Broadway Baby.
Certainly song selection wasn't great and I would have liked a few less popular songs...but definately a great night out full of Sondheim Standards!
Congrats to All!

I was expecting a fair bit from this year's Hats Off, largely because of the impressive cast list, and because, being my first Hats Off, I had no reason to expect otherwise Yes, there were scripts in hands for Putting it Together, but I thought they did quite well at integrating them into the song, and with the subject matter, I thought it forgiveable. I can understand you not liking Amanda's Broadway Baby. When she started singing it, I thought "Woah, this is a lot different from the last time I saw this song performed," but her acting was fantastic, and won me over. I admit that she is fallible, and I'm still not a fan of her I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas from last year's Carols in the Domain (but so many people sounded awful in that that I refuse to judge anyone by it. Hell, even Kane sounded a bit on the off side). And while You Could Drive a Person Crazy was a fun one, it's been driving me crazy for the last hour or so, refusing to leave my head. Agony was definitely preferable. *wanders off trying to sing "Agony, misery, woe, etc"*

I'm a little late with this I know. At least if it was an ongoing show I could lie about when I saw it ;-)
I loved this show. There was little variety in quality, but highlights for me were All I Need Is the Girl, which I have always liked, Agony and Sunday.
The gods decree that when you have such a concept you must cheat the concept at least once, as done by Centrestage in using an instrumental version of Jet Song. (Get it.) I forgive them. They are good.
The piano accompaniment to Another Hundred People was a bit disappointing, especially with an Orchestra just there. It was great having an orchestra there by the way. It does add a lot.
I thought that the entire last section was predictable. Those five women performing you could guess what the songs would have been, even if you didn't assign them to the same person.
I was a very happy little audience member all night. Very cool.

Just found that pics from Melbourne Hats Off have been posted, and there are some good ones. It's a shame Rachael in that photo did have her hat off Best hat ever. www.oscefa.org.au/hats_off_2004.htmLove Alex Rathgeber's expression in Giants in the Sky. The Trisha photo is so very Trisha. Love it. Love the Ian/Rachael one, too. And the Simon one... Oh, darn it. There are lots of good shots there.
