Virgins: a Musical Threesome!
by Mathew Frank and Dean Bryant
Dean Bryant and Mathew Frank's must-see Aussie musical Virgins, is a satirical, political, and burlesque tale of virginity, internet porn, and Australian Idol for Asylum seekers!
"Funny, sexy and satirical, the show twists and turns&it is rare to see musical theatre making a bold social statement communicating a lot very briskly. By the end you wonder why we don't have more musical satires." The Virgin Wars, Next Wave Festival, RealTime, July 2002
Virgins comprises three vignettes, The Virgin Wars, Girl on the Screen and Jumpin' the Q. Linking central characters Tracey, Lauren and Holly who represent 'every woman', the trilogy explores the sexual gauntlet of popular culture, and the pressures of an increasingly conservative, right-wing environment.
What's a modern girl to do... join in, rebel against or opt out? Join the Virgins on their quest through fear v freedom in:
The Virgin Wars as Tracey leads a group of virgins in a tour of high schools promoting abstinence through song and dance& but is one of their girls as pure as the press releases suggest?
Girl on the Screen as tabloid columnist Lauren, unwittingly embarks on a journalistic striptease when she is sent to bury a group of women who run soft-porn websites.
Jumpin' the Q as Holly, host of a reality TV song competition for asylum seekers, deals with desperate competitors and the invisible machinations of the powers that be.
Written by Dean Bryant and Mathew Frank, Green-Room award winning writers of the Midsumma and off-Broadway smash-hit musical, Prodigal, Virgins features a cast of five feisty women; Esther Hannaford, Rosemarie Harris, Verity Hunt-Ballard, Amanda Levy and Kellie Rode.
A comedy with a difference, Virgins explores, reveals and takes a razor sharp but bitingly funny view on the issues that 'everywoman' faces, this is a musical theatre trilogy that is a little ironic and just a little sexy! Virgins is certain to be a hot Midsumma ticket.
"The finest music-making... rivalled the best creations of Sondheim." Suitcase (Bryant & Frank) Melbourne Festival, The Age, Oct 2004
