Before Rent, Jonathan Larson had another story to tell - his own. Following the highly acclaimed season of Falsettos for the 2003 Midsumma Festival, Blackbird Productions are back for the 2004 Festival with the Australasian Premiere of tick, tick … BOOM!
Jonathan Larson originally wrote and performed tick, tick … BOOM! as a dramatic monologue based on his struggle to become a successful rock composer and lyricist. Larson, of course, was the creator of the hit Broadway musical Rent.
His tragic death of an undiagnosed aortic aneurism in 1996, three days before the review performances of Rent at the New York Theatre Workshop and ten days before his 36th birthday, makes this energetic and intensely personal musical all the more poignant to admirers of his life and work.
After his untimely death, his producing partner Victoria Leacock brought David Auburn, author of the Pulitzer Prize winning play Proof aboard as script consultant to reconfigure the piece. He restructured the monologue into a seamless three actor musical.
tick, tick ... BOOM! is the musical tale of Jonathan's days as a struggling artist in SoHo. It’s 1990 and Rent is still six years away from its Broadway debut. He is on the verge of turning 30 - faced with life-altering choices and fighting to keep his dreams. His girlfriend wants to get married and move out of the city; his best friend is making big bucks on Madison Avenue; and he's still waiting tables and trying to write that great American rock musical.
With fourteen songs, ten characters, three actors, and a rock band, tick, tick ... BOOM! comes to life with comedy, song and heartfelt passion taking you on the playwright/composer's journey that led to the Broadway blockbuster, Rent.
tick, tick... BOOM! plays at Chapel Off Chapel in Melbourne from from February 6, 2004. Bookings: 8290 7000 or www.lastminute.com.au
