Les Misérables - Returning to Melbourne after 20 Years Around the World
Les Misérables, declared the most popular musical by listeners to BBC
Radio 2, out-polling smash hits such as the Phantom of the Opera,
Sound of Music, Grease and Cats, is 20 years old this month. Premiered
on October 8, 1985 at the Barbican Theatre in London, it returns to
Melbourne on Thursday 20 October to Saturday 29 October at the
National Theatre, St Kilda, in a new production by Loyola Musical
Society with design by award-winning designer, Danielle Brustman
(Black Swan of Trespass and House of Application).
Based on the novel by Victor Hugo, this Les Miserables will feature TV
personality Gregory Ross as Javert, Philip Buchanan (Fiddler on the
Roof " Melb) as Jean Valjean, Madeline Cain as Cosette with Sean Gunn
as Marius, new-comer Dearne Sliskovic stuns as Fantine, Aleksander
Vass (Neighbours) and Maureen Andrew (Grease/Saturday Night Fever
Australian tours) as the Thenardier’s and Liam Pedersen (Stripsearch)
as student leader, Enjolras (played at some performances by Cole
Rintoul of boy band, ‘Mercury 4’).
Les Misérables really now requires no description. It is the story of
Jean Valjean, sentenced to a total 19 years in jail for initially
taking a loaf of bread to feed his starving family. This epic tale
then follows Valjean’s transformation from bitter convict to a man of
deep spirituality, heroism and morality.
No Les Miserables is complete without the spectacular and devastating
scenes on the student barricade on the streets of Paris in 1832.
Designer, Danielle Brustman has not romanticised this key element of
the story at all. Taking from actual drawings of the era, she has
ernestly re-created the student-built fortress in all its austere
futility.
The production has a big cast with a mix of fine professional and
amateur performers. Melbourne Music Theatre ace and Director of this
Les Mis, Will Conyers, said “I am staggered by the number of ‘pro’s’
who wanted to be involved with this production " onstage and off. But
then, the themes of Les Mis are so timely in our current world.”
