" ... it's like Rent meets Oklahoma ... but not ... cos there's folk music, pop, yodeling, dance, puppetry, a song about nipple rings, suicide bombers, poodle-phobia, cross dressing, infertility and it's really about skydiving though not what you'd expect."
The Wild Blue transforms the art of skydiving into a metaphorical dreamscape where humanity confronts its most prevalent fears both intimate and global. Performed by a cast of seventeen fresh and exciting young artists - The Wild Blue is a mesmerizing combination of story and song interweaved with monologues, dance, puppetry, physical theatre and audio visual.
"The dialogue is dazzling - layered, political, poetic and highly dramatic"
Premier's Literary Awards (Victoria)
Created and directed by St.Martins' Artistic Director Anthony Crowley - winner of the 2003 Wal Cherry Award, 2005 New Dramatists Award and short-listed for the 2005 Premier's Literary Awards - The Wild Blue tackles traditional musical theatre head-on, launching this unusual collective well beyond barricades and chandeliers. Edgy, surreal and poetic - it features an original score of nineteen songs inhabiting a visual world inspired by the artist Magritte.
"As for the lyric ... I like your rhyme scheme - it's graceful and unexpected"
- Stephen Sondheim
In an industry dominated by franchised imports The Wild Blue is contemporary, provocative, irreverent and undeniably Australian.
"The songs are very strong and interesting and fresh ... "
