We've a little way to go yet, but it never hurts to be prepared It's been confirmed that Phantom of the Opera will be hitting Australia in 2007/08, as a continuation of the world tour that's currently threading its way through Asia. Some cast will remain as originally cast, though I imagine by that point a fair few will have moved on, including the American Phantom, Brad Little, as it is rumoured that the current (Australian) Raoul, Jarrod Carland, will be taking his place.

I think we can do without this tiresome show ...again and again. If we have to have another ALW show could we have a new production of Evita?

I'd love to agree with you, but I haven't seen it yet. It may get to be my first ALW show.
But if you're picking alternatives, why not something completely new to us. The Woman in White, The Beautiful Game, Whistle Down the Wind. They're all Aussie no shows so far aren't they?

True, any of those mentioned (jackjackjack)would be preferable. How much Phantom do we have to suffer. Please, give us something new!

Just heard that James Millar (Eureka, Boyband, Oklahoma) will be the new Raoul/Phantom understudy in the tour. All the best to him, and congrats! Now just waiting to hear what other cast changes have been made.

Ugh. While it always good to have Warlow onstage, I roll my eyes at the thought of having PHANTOM back again. ( Third time around) Why can't we see some newer material? Next year we have MISS SAIGON and PHANTOM, why it is just like 1991. Then we have a politician (in pre election mode) on about Melbourne being a "hub" of theatrical activity - who is this guy? Is he aware that fortunate Sydney currently has PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE DESERT, TITANIC and later BILLY ELLIOTT all new (or new to us) shows, while we are getting the leftovers.

*squeals* My mum woke me up this morning, practically shaking me, saying "Shelley, get up!! Anthony Warlow is going to be in Phantom next year!!". I was half asleep and had no idea what she was on about. It didn't take me long though

I just peed my pants!!! Charming, Buff. Another article (They're everywhere!) www.theage.com.au/news/entertainment/phantoms-return-built-on-safety-in-old-numbers/2006/10/20/1160851138167.htmlAnd Yonkers, it's been 15 years since we last had Phantom here. There are a lot of people who never saw it when it was here, and far more who would have seen it and loved it, so will be quick to leap in and see it again now that the chance is here. It's something people are familiar with, without being a jukebox musical or glitzy film adaptation, and so will be easier to sell. Especially with Warlow in the lead. It's all very well to want purely new material, but there isn't enough good, merchandisable theatre being written that it's a sustainable way of keeping the industry. You need to bring back older, familiar pieces at the same time. Something familiar makes people comfortable, and then you can hit them with something bolder. But then, you also seem to have forgotten we have Sideshow Alley opening here, as well. A new Australian musical with entirely new material. When's the last time Sydney saw one of those? I for one am looking forward to 2007, and think the strong productions in both Melbourne and Sydney can only be good in the long run. It looks like the marketing for both Saigon and Phantom is starting strongly, so if that keeps up, we should see happy results.

Except the Warlow fans I don't think too many people will be "quick to leap in to see it again". Without Warlow this revival I believe would be hard pressed to find a sustainable audience. I also wonder in these days of $100+ tickets how many people will revisit this show. How long is Warlow contracted for, three months?
As for SIDESHOW, isn't this supposed to open before both SAIGON and PHANTOM? They seems rather slow in the publicity and promotion departments. While I look forward to seeing new material I can't help but be concerned. No name show with a no name cast tends to lead to no audience. Unless there is something or someone they haven't told us about I fear it won't be around for long.
As for good merchandisable theatre here a few shows that should be given a chance here DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS, THE DROWSEY CHAPERONE, JERSEY BOYS, THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE, OUR HOUSE, AVENUE Q, CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG and any number of older shows that are fit for a revival.
I can't help think that Melbourne is getting the raw deal. Sydney has PRISCILLA, TITANIC and will be getting BILLY ELLIOTT interesting and exciting shows. We are getting the tried, true and pretty unexciting fare.
