I won't be rushing to see this. These days ROCKY HORROR is about as cutting edge as THE BOYFRIEND. As someone who saw the original Melbourne production back in the 70's (as a child!) at the Regent Palace Theatre in Fitzroy, no production could ever surpass the Frank n Furter of Max Phipps and a supporting cast that included the likes of Joan Brockenshire, Tommy Dysart, Sal Sharah, Grant Wightman etc. There was a reason that it ran 18 months. Fabulous.

Playing the odds perhaps, but unnecessarily negative. James

Yes, maybe it is overkill, however the point I was trying to make was that in the early productions of the show there was an energy level we don't see anymore. The "Franks" were all very strong classically trained actors. The original, Tim Curry, then here we had Reg Livermore, Arthur Dignam and Max Phipps (remember he played Gough Whitlam in The Dismissal). These days we tend to go for soap stars, like Craig Mc Lachlan or in this new production a rock singer who acts a bit. THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW we see these days is like GREASE, a very long way from the grittiness and energy packed original productions. Now these shows are packaged to look like something from a Disneyland theme park.

A "rock singer who acts a bit"!!!! Oh my god, where have you been? This guy just picked up every theatre award in the country for his extraordinary talent. Man, this guy is an amazingly charasmatic actor. He's got the sexiness, wit and razor sharp edginess that has been missing from the last half a dozen Frank-n-furters in this country. Sorry, dont know Max Phipps and I'm sure he was great, but but surely the talent flow in this country didn't dry up in the 70's. And don't even get me started on the collective brilliance of Paul Capsis, Tamsin Carroll, Sharon Millerchip and John Waters! No soap stars in sight, just the real thing. Directed by Gale Edwards! I get the distinct impression that this production will in NO way resemble anything you would see in Disneyland. At the very least, I'm curious as to what they will come up with.

iOTA made a big impact with HEDWIG as he came along as a bit of an unknown. It really isn't such a big leap from HEDWIG to ROCKY so I have no doubt that he'll equipment himself competently. With Paul Capsis when I first saw him 12 years ago I thought he was terrific but he is still doing the same performance, he never really developed so whether he can pull something out of the hat remains to be seen. I wonder why Gale Edwards is doing this ? I wouldn't have thought it would have to much appeal to a director like her. I guess they are throwing a lot of money at her. She is a bit of a one trick pony, she has a few ideas that she tends to recycle again and again in each show.
The original (London and Australia) productions used old disused theatres/cinemas as the performance space. the floor was covered in old faded and torn carpet, there was scaffolding and cobwebs everywhere. The actors used hand held mics (with cords) the lighting was harsh. I could be wrong but this doesn't sound like what you'll be seeing in a new theatre at Star City.
When I visited the website there was no mention of John Waters. Has it been reported elsewhere? You (Benz) really should investigate the work of Max Phipps, it would be well worth the effort.

When I visited the website there was no mention of John Waters. Has it been reported elsewhere? Yes it was reported at the Launch last week - which he attended and the photos are all on the Getty images site. It was also reported on JohnWaters.info and his myspace page (both of which I run for him). I have seen many different versions of Rocky since the 70s and my personal favourite Frank will always be Daniel Abineri, my favourite narrator was Stuart Wagstaff (tho I will now have to change that to John!), and my favourite Eddie/Dr Scott was Russell Crowe. Strangely I have never really been enamoured with the Australian choices for Janet, Magenta or Columbia. But Tamsin may well change that opinion ! PS Hi to those I dont know - I forgot my password for a few years and just browsed instead!

Thanks KJ. I'm a John Waters fan though I didn't know he had a myspace page - I must check it out. I can go way back to seeing him in the NY Shakespeare musical version of TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA (does anyone here even know of that?) at Her Majesty's Theatre. I do however, wish he was appearing in something a little more worthy of his abilities than ROCKY HORROR - how about a local DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS?

I'm torn whether to buy tickets now or wait... might grab some for my b'day in March or April if it's still on here then. I can go way back to seeing him in the NY Shakespeare musical version of TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA (does anyone here even know of that?) Yes. John Guare is a freaking legend. Someone needs to do another version of Six Degrees of Separation again. Enough said.

Just want to add my 2 cents in regards to iOTA: I was absolutely blown away by his acting and singing skills in Hedwig. He is a phenomenal performer.
(Also, why on earth would you want a carbon copy of what happened in the 70's? It's already been done.)
I'm going to judge it when I see it and not before.
